FREE FRIDAYS BOOK
January 9, 2015: Today’s Free Fridays book offer is CLOSURE by Randall Wood, a nailbiting, nation-wide manhunt for an elusive killer.
When a prominent lawyer is shot while waiting at a suburban stop sign it sets off a nation-wide manhunt for an elusive killer. Special Agent Jack Randall of the FBI finds himself appointed to track down and stop the shooter. Not by his superiors, but by the killer himself.
As more bodies fall the shooter takes his message to the press, earning the support of the public with his choice of targets and confounding the FBI at every turn. From the desert of Nevada to the urban jungle of New York City, Jack and his team follow the trail of bodies and haunting messages left behind by the killer. With the pressure to find him mounting on Jack, the assassin’s crimes grow bolder, and his message more sinister and closer to home.
It becomes clear to Jack that in order to find the shooter, he may have to look inside his own past, and become the man he was years ago.

January 9, 2015: Today’s Free Fridays Bonus offer is HOIST ON MY OWN PETARD by Dan Harris for FREE from HarperCollins. Read about how writing 10% Happier threw an author’s advice back in his own face.
In 2014, Dan Harris published his memoir 10% Happier. The book—which describes his reluctant embrace of meditation after a drug problem, an on-air freak-out, and an unplanned “spiritual” journey—became an instant bestseller and Dan, to his own surprise, became a public evangelist for mindfulness. Hoist on My Own Petard is the story of what happens to Dan Harris after the runaway success of his memoir and the lessons he had to (re)learn in the process.

It’s Barnes and Nobles Free Fridays with ebook, app AND videos! Thanks B&N for this special October 10th treat with extra videos and DC Comics Fall TV series in honor of New York Comic Con! I have to say that The Flash first episode was well done just the right amount of backstory (for newbies) and action for fans of the genre. I’m finding Gotham to be a bit boring! It might be that you never get a chance to miss Batman (I just can’t escape the character from animated series to movies he’s freaking everywhere on 24 hours!). Arrow looks like it’s returning to the heart stopping great action from the first season after veering off into a love story (blech). Constantine is still a mystery for me even after interviewing the cast (youtube) at SDCC don’t know much about the series.

FREE FRIDAY BOOK
September 5, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays book selection is BENEATH A NAVAJO MOON— a compelling novel of love, crime and tradition set against the iconic Navajo landscape.
What happens when danger and love collide under a Navajo moon? The search for a woman who disappeared in 1906 has lead cultural anthropologist Erin Dawson to Cedar Canyon, where the iconic terrain of red rock walls and mesas keep Navajo traditions — and maybe criminal evidence — well hidden.
When Erin’s search leads her to cross paths with tribal policeman Adam Silverhorn, it’s hardly love at first sight. But everywhere she turns, Adam is already there. Fighting their feelings for each other, the two are suddenly thrust into a battle far more dangerous — a common quest to rout an insidious drug cartel that has spawned the recent rise in gang violence on the reservation. Adam’s position of authority gives Erin a rare glimpse into Navajo life few outsiders like her ever see — and into a crime ring that no one dares to imagine.
As danger mounts, Adam and Erin begin to wonder if they will live to tell how they really feel.

FREE FRIDAYS BOOK
May 16, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays book selection is SHADOWS IN THE SUN by Gayathri Ramprasad — an inspiring memoir about one woman’s journey out of the darkness of depression.
As a young girl in Bangalore, Gayathri was surrounded by the fragrance of jasmine and flickering oil lamps, her family protected by Hindu gods and goddesses. But as she grew older, demons came forth from the dark corners of her fairytale-like kingdom—with the scariest creatures lurking within her.
The daughter of a respected Brahmin family, Gayathri began to feel different. “I can hardly eat, sleep, or think straight. The only thing I can do is cry unending tears.” Her parents insisted it was all in her head. Because traditional Hindu culture has no concept of depression, no doctor could diagnose and no medicine could heal her mysterious illness.
This beautifully written memoir traces Gayathri’s courageous thirty-year battle with the depression that consumed her from adolescence through marriage and a move to the United States. It was only after the birth of her first child, when her husband discovered her in the backyard “clawing the earth furiously with my bare hands, intent on digging a grave so that I could bury myself alive,” that she finally got the help she needed. After a stay in a psych ward she eventually found “the light within,” an emotional and spiritual awakening from the darkness of her tortured mind.
Gayathri’s inspiring story provides a first-of-its-kind cross-cultural lens to mental illness – the very different way it is (or is not) regarded in India and in America, and the way she drew on both her rich Hindu heritage and Western medicine to find healing.

All Over but the Shoutin’ by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Rick Bragg is one of my favorite books. Rick Bragg’s use of the English language, the rich details of a hard-scrabble life, and the description of real-life characters most people could only dream up, makes this book a must read. His journey from backwoods Alabama to Harvard will make you both laugh and cry.

Tee hee this week’s free selection is a real bosom heaving sexy romance with British nobility and of course a scoundrel with a heart of gold! Just the stuff that I read all through high school to my great disappointment that I never found my own prince in the Iowa farmlands of my hometown!
Today’s Free Fridays book selection is The Seduction of Lady Phoebe
by Ella Quinn – a classic Regency romance full of wit, playfulness and a sizzling chemistry.
Phoebe Stanhope tries very hard to be a true Lady of noble standing, but she’s just having too much fun participating in sharp-witted banter and riding her purebred horse over the barrows and through the valleys of 18th-century England. She’s even managed to avoid a rather large list of potential suitors – that is, until she meets Marcus Finley and her world gets turned upside-down completely.
Marcus can’t deny the spark between him and Phoebe, but he has a dark past that he’ll do anything to avoid sharing with her – even keeping the secret of a betrayal that years ago turned Phoebe’s heart cold against the idea of love. Can Phoebe maintain her independent spirit while falling for Marcus, and can he convince her of his present worth even while his past continues to haunt him?
Today’s Free Fridays app selection is Buddha Finger by Marmalade, an exciting action game app that will bring out the warrior in you! Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Ella recommends:
If you’ve never read Mary Jo Putney’s books, you’re missing out! She is one of my must-read authors. Her latest release, book #5 in her Lost Lords series,Sometimes a Rogue, is a wonderful example of her storytelling abilities. Her writing is elegant and her historical accuracy is spot on. Once you start, you’ll be hooked forever.
Rob had no idea what he was getting himself into when he volunteered to rescue Sarah who had saved her heavily pregnant twin sister from an anti-British terrorist group and was taken instead. The sizzling, sensual tension between these two strong-willed people as they race across Ireland to escape was done with a skilled hand, and their happily ever after was all one could wish for.
Not only is Mary Jo a great writer—having won several RITAs and other awards, including Romance Writers of America Life Time Achievement Award—she is a fantastic person as well. I had the privilege and the pleasure of meeting her this past summer, and she immediately offered to help me solve a problem I was having.
