Get ready to be ‘Static Shock’ with the release of the complete third season of the beloved animated series. The two-disc package is available on wb.com/warnerarchive and online retailers. It’s a great series that I watched back in the 2000’s and perfect to revisit or introduce to new fans aka kids or new to the geek world before seeing Black Panther <grrr>

“In the third season, everything sort of got spruced up,” recalls LaMarr, known far and wide for his voice performances in Samurai Jack, Futurama and Family Guy, and his live-action roles for MADtv and Pulp Fiction. “The writing was just as good as ever, but they really raised the stakes. Static’s costume went from homemade to a legitimate super hero costume, Richie became his own super hero in Gear, and that meant there was less sitting back at headquarters – we started going on a lot more duo-action adventures.”

Static Shock – Toys in the Hood (S3 E9)

“Moreover, it was so great to finally have a black super hero who didn’t have ‘black’ in his name. I could relate to him. Here’s a kid who is smart, who’s trying to do the right thing, dealing with relatable problems whether it was family or school or friendships. Despite that fact that it was a cartoon that revolved around super heroes, it felt real to me.”

Phil LaMarr starred as Virgil Hawkins/Static for the entire series run and the release of the third season saw a major shift in the show with important guest appearances, upgrade to his tech and integration in the overall universe. Static got a new costume, Richie his BFF/partner-in-crime-fighting became the super hero Gear and the duo fought crime with some major baddies. All of this feels like a direct line to the upcoming Black Panther since Static ‘returned to Africa’ to find his roots, teamed up with the Justice League and Superman. LaMarr & Marsden worked together on the Disney animated series ‘The Weekenders’ which really made enriched their chemistry as friends IRL and animation!

Static Shock & Gear

“Static Shock provided a second opportunity to play partners and best friends – which was great because we were already good friends,” LaMarr says. “Our friendship on the show was authentic. And there’s nothing better than getting paid every week to work with your friend.”

LaMarr’s connection to Static appealed to him in so many ways as a fan and as someone who was once a black teenage boy. “As a comic book guy, Static was a dream come true – a character who really felt real to me,” LaMarr says. “I always thought Static would be what I would be if I got powers as a teenager. I loved Spidey and Bats, but I never wanted to be them. There are tortured souls, and everything they do is informed by that guilt. For Static, the worst problem was having to do his homework.

Static Shock: The Complete Third Season featured numerous guest performances from actors as acclaimed and diverse as four-time Emmy Award winner Alfre Woodard (Miss Evers’ Boys, Desperate Housewives, Hill Street Blues), Emmy Award winner Roscoe Lee Browne (Logan’s Run, The Cowboys), Brock Peters (To Kill A Mockingbird, Soylent Green), Golden Globe winner Terence Stamp (Billy Budd, Superman), three-time Emmy Award winner Jean Smart (24, Garden State), Bud Court (Harold & Maude, M*A*S*H), Dennis Haysbert (24, Major League), Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite, The Dark Knight), T’Keyah Crystal Keymah (In Living Color, That’s So Raven), Danica McKeller (The Wonder Years), Phil Morris (Smallville), Charles Rocket (Moonlighting), Sean Patrick Thomas (The District), Kimberly Brooks (Mass Effect), Bumper Robinson (The Game), David Faustino (Married With Children), Nicolette Sheridan (Desperate Housewives), David Arquette (Cougar Town), Tia Texada (Third Watch) and rapper Romeo Miller.

Also performing guest roles during Static Shock: The Complete Third Season are the voices of Warner Bros. Animation’s core group of DC Super Heroes, including actors from Batman: The Animated Series (Kevin Conroy, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Arleen Sorkin, Robert Hastings) and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited (George Newbern, Carl Lumbly, Maria Canals Barrera, Michael Rosenbaum), as well as Phil LaMarr himself as the voice of Green Lantern/John Stewart.

Static Shock, Gear & the Justice League

“The crossover episodes with the Justice League were so much fun for me – it was great to feel like Static Shock was part of the legacy of the super hero entertainment that I grew up watching and reading,” LaMarr says. “Associating Static with the Justice League sort of legitimized our little show, putting Static on the same level as supers like Batman, Green Lantern and all the rest. Plus getting to act again alongside my Justice League acting pals – Maria Canals Barrera, Susan Eisenberg, Carl Lumbly, Michael Rosenbaum, George Newbern, Kevin Conroy – was a blast, especially because now they were coming to MY house. It was actually a little weird because we were sitting in the same chairs as we always did when recording Justice League – but now I had more lines. Of course, I had two different characters – Static and Green Lantern John Stewart.”

Image result for static shock green lantern season 3 LaMarr said the dual role – which put him in the unusual position of recording two characters talking to each other – was the first time he encountered that situation in his career.

“I thought the writers wrote those scenes as a challenge for me,” LaMarr recalls. “At least they didn’t have them singing harmony or something crazy like that!”

Static Shock: The Complete Third Season features an all-star lineup of writers behind the scripts: Paul Dini, Dwayne McDuffie, Len Uhley, Ernie Altbacker, John Semper, Courtney Lilly and Adam Beechen. For the Static-Superman team-up episode entitled “Toys in the Hood,” Semper crafted a story that was written by Academy Award winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave).

An episode entitled “Static in Africa” saw the Hawkins family on vacation in Ghana, where Static teams with a legendary African folk hero to combat a group of bandits. The episode was particularly important to LaMarr.

Static in Africa

“Static in Africa was a blast for so many reasons,” LaMarr recalls. “It was a thrill to work for the first time with Michael Jai White and Roscoe Lee Browne, as well as my Justice League castmate Carl Lumbly. Carl and Roscoe are guys whose work I’d seen growing up, and to share a studio with them was fantastic.

“Moreover, it was really cool to be able to explore our roots in a Saturday morning cartoon. I had never seen contemporary Africa on Saturday morning – an Africa that was not unlike our own world. We have super heroes, they have super heroes. Africa wasn’t showed as exotica – it was a world where people like us live. And to me, that was a great part of Static Shock. It wasn’t about that Static was black; but he was black. His life, his world – those were real. And that kind of normalization is what’s key to true diversity.”

The Static Shock: The Complete Third Season two-disc set includes the following animated episodes:

Disc One

Hard As Nails

Gear

Static in Africa

Shebang

The Usual Suspect

A League Of Their Own, Part 1

A League Of Their Own, Part 2

The final and fourth season of Star Wars Rebels will premier Monday, October 16th on Disney XD

Well in the final season the Ghost crew joins the Rebel Alliance that is having a hard time against the enormous and powerful Galactic Empire. It becomes even more personal for Ezra as the Empire threatens Lothal with Imperial Occupation. The entire crew goes back to fight an all foe the evil genius Grand Admiral Thrown. Going home means that they will reunite with old friends and make new alliances to try to throw the Imperials off his home planet.

What do YOU think is in store for our ragtag crew of rebels? I’m hoping that we’ll see more of Kanan & Hera’s relationship (I read the book about how the met <swoon>). I don’t think that Sabine will never stop thinking of Ezra as her ‘kid brother’ but I don’t think we’ll get a Princess Leia/Luke reveal that he’s REALLY her brother! I’m very excited about meeting some of the new characters and creatures in the final season. I love the alien creature we’ve met over the past three seasons on Star Wars Rebels and can’t wait to see what Dave and the team think up for the epic final season! Leave a comment below or tweet me @cherry_LA with what have been some of your favorite episodes, stories and characters! Let’s live tweet the premier episode and get ready to be on the edge of our seats as the final epic season unfolds. May the force be with you …..

“Star Wars Rebels” is created by Emmy Award-winning executive producer Dave Filoni (“Star Wars: The Clone Wars”), Academy Award® nominee Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Days of Future Past”) and Emmy nominee Carrie Beck. The Lucasfilm Animation production is executive produced by Filoni and Kinberg, and co-executive produced by Emmy nominee Henry Gilroy.
The returning voice cast includes Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex, David Oyelowo as Kallus, Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn. Warwick Davis joins the cast this season as Rukh, Admiral Thrawn’s deadly assassin.

Before season four premieres, catch all the “Star Wars Rebels” episodes from season one through season three available anytime on the Disney XD App beginning THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 (12:01 a.m. PDT).

I’m geek fangirling with the newest DC Comics Justice League moving premiering on DVD/BluRay/Digital HD on February 7th but if you are in Los Angeles or NYC you can enjoy a special viewing and Q&A with cast and producers. I grew up loving Justice League and have been very happy with the DC series. They can be a little dark and violent but since they are geared towards an older fan based the stories have some adult themes. I have also been incredibly impressed with the writing and direction of the films. They have taken classic characters we grew up with and have enriched the story as well as given them a more contemporary look and attitude to appeal to casual fans as well. Now that they have decided to ‘reboot’ Constantine and begin to bring him into the TV/Animation family it will give new fans of the character an opportunity to get to know him as well as old fans some major nerd love. I’m hoping to chat with Matt Ryan again since I interviewed him (and the cast) at SDCC for Constantine (NBC) a series that I feel did not get the time to find an audience that it deserved.

I’m so excited about the Justice League Dark that is the latest  DC Universe Original Movie that is premiering at The Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills on January 23, 2017  and at the Director’s Guild of America in New York on February 2, 2017. Fans are able to attend the screening and stay for the filmmakers and members of the voice cast  post-screening panel discussion. Matt Ryan (Constantine, The Halcyon), the voice of Constantine, and Nicholas Turturro (NYPD Blue, Blue Bloods), the voice of Deadman, will attend both the Los Angeles and New York premieres and take part in the panel discussions along with supervising producer James Tucker, director Jay Oliva and character designer Phil Bourassa. Ray Chase (Final Fantasy XV videogame), the voice of Jason Blood/Etrigan, joins the World Premiere festivities in Los Angeles. Additional talent participating at the two premieres will be announced as confirmed.

Justice League Dark …

When innocent civilians begin committing unthinkable crimes across Metropolis, Gotham City and beyond, Batman must call upon mystical counterparts to eradicate this demonic threat to the planet. Enter Justice League Dark, reluctantly led by the Hellblazer himself, John Constantine. Like Batman, Constantine is a cunning, often cynical loner who is the best at his chosen profession – but quickly realizes the sinister forces plaguing the planet will require help from other supernatural alliances. Forming a new “league” with sorceress Zatanna, otherworldly Deadman, and Jason Blood and his powerful alter ego Etrigan the Demon, this team of Dark Arts specialists must unravel the mystery of Earth’s supernatural plague and contend with the rising, powerful villainous forces behind the siege – before it’s too late for all of mankind.

Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 10.48.42 PMAre you a Star Wars loving lego enthusiast? Well  Disney XD’s new animated television show, LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, is the show for you. It’s a 22 minute series voiced by Vanessa Lengies, Nicolas Cantu, Eugene Byrd, and Matthew Wood.

The Freemakers
gives the audience a new story focused on a scavenger family, the Freemakers. They are a family of three, and the youngest member, Rowan, is extremely strong with the force. As many fans of the infamous series know, when a character is strong with the force the audience can expect multiple hi jinxes. It’s a new story, that doesn’t feature Leia and Luke Skywalker as the main protagonists. But original fan favorites are still featured; Luke and Leia made their first appearance in episode 5 and Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, formerly Palpatine, made their first appearance in episode 1.

The Freemakers salvage parts from destroyed or abandoned ships and use the parts to create new ones, that they then sale to earn a living. But when Rowan discovers an ancient artifact, the Kyber Saber, he discovers his connection to the force. He is then mentored by a seemingly good-intentioned jedi named Naare. This scavenger family is now in the middle of the battle between the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance. As there is a search for the Kyber Saber crystals where good and bad are compete to find the crystals. And all is not as it seems.

This show is very interesting and it captivates the audience’s attention from the first scene. All in episode one the viewer will discover so much, and there are multiple introductions of characters, ships, and themes. All in episode one the viewer will discover that Naare doesn’t have good intentions with Rowan and is actually with the Empire.

Overall this a great show and the visuals are what the audience should expect from a lego based television show. It stays true to what is expected from a show with such a strong fan base, it introduces new and old characters that viewers will come to love.

The next episode airs July 18 on Disney XD at 10:00 AM.

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 9.55.30 PM“Black Panther #1 drove new fans into stores across the county, topping the sales charts and selling out in two days,” says Editor In Chief Axel Alonso.  “This series of videos will direct even more eyes toward the most discussed comic book series – and character – of the year.”

Marvel comics is introducing the Black Panther to a new generation of fans with the new spotlight video series. It’s timed with Black Panther on the big screen in the Captain America: Civil War (out Thursday, May 5th) where a lot of people might not know the guy in the all black body suit!

Marvel is showing comic book love as they prepare for his breakout movie in a few years with this tie in with the characters best selling comic book series. This video series merges animation, comic book, narration and commentary for a immersion into his world. It’s a great addition for old fans as well as new that don’t know his backstory.

If you haven’t had a chance to grab Black Panther #1 by The Atlantic national correspondent and National Book Award winner, Ta-Nehisi Coates, accompanied with outstanding art by Brian Stelfreeze that debuted as the best-selling comic for the month of April. Head to your local comic book shop and grab one! It looks gorgeous and is a stunning story for a character that had been put on a back burner by fans who forgot how cool the Black Panther is!

Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 9.43.26 PM

“After decades of great work done on Black Panther — everyone from Reginald Hudlin to Don McGregor to Christopher Priest — it really is an honor to be writing King T’Challa,” says Coates. “Add to that the masterful performance by Chadwick Boseman as the ruler of Wakanda and it really feels like this is Black Panther’s time.”

Once you pick up your copy watch the new video produced by Bow & Arrow and bookmark the page for a monthly release. These new bold hip-hop driven animated videos will present not only Black Panther but his kingdom of Wakanda and his place in the Marvel Universe. It’s time for an all new audience to know this hero who has an origin story unlike any other. The iconic visuals of his costume as well as the vistas of his village looking over his people has always struck a cord within my heart.

So I am very happy that every month fans can enjoy a new “Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet” video that will coincide with the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Black Panther. The “Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet” videos will introduce new and old fans to Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Panther series with commentary from Mr. Coates, motion graphics and a entrancing hip-hop score from some of the world’s largest hip-hop acts.

The addition of this video series with a hip hop feel .. hmmm would Marvel’s Super Hero T’Challa, Screen Shot 2016-05-04 at 9.59.52 PMthe Black Panther be a hip-hop guy or more jazz with sharp edges .. I’ll let you be the judge of that after watching the series and getting a feel for the character but to me he’s Miles Davis a cool cat who walks his own path in dark smokey rooms!

You can Watch “Black Panther 101” now!

Tonight is the  Los Angeles premiere of Batman: Bad Blood (clip)!

frame-082495I am looking forward to interviewing the entire Bat “family” on the red carpet  — Jason O’Mara (Batman), Yvonne Strahovski (Batwoman), Sean Maher (Nightwing), Gaius Charles (Batwing) and Stuart Allan (Robin) — along with Travis Willingham (voice of The Heretic) and filmmakers: producer James Tucker, director Jay Oliva and character designer Phil Bourassa at the Paley Center for Media (465 North Beverly Drive) as well as seeing the screening at 7pm! I’ll post my interviews on Cherrylosangles @youtube

About Batman: Bad Blood

The mysterious disappearance of Batman (voice of Jason O’Mara), coupled with the emergence of powerful and malevolent new villains in Gotham City, force Nightwing (Maher) and Robin (Stuart Allan) to take crime-fighting into their own hands – while simultaneously searching for their missing leader. They’re not alone for long. New super heroes Batwoman (Strahovski) and Batwing (Gaius Charles) – each armed with her/his own sensibilities, physical abilities and crime-fighting tools – arrive in Gotham to assist in the cause. As this new “family” strives to find its own dynamic, chilling clues lead the group to suspect the Dark Knight may have gone over to the dark side. It’s up to the entire Bat team to uncover the truth before Gotham City falls prey to its greatest threat yet.

Produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, Batman: Bad Blood will be distributed by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on February 2, 2016.

Spoiler Alert! The new mid season premier of Star Wars Rebels returns on Wednesday, January 20 (9PM ET/PT) on Disney XD.

cid:image004.jpg@01D14EF8.967CEB00

*SPOILER ALERT* Here’s a New Mid-Season Trailer for “Star Wars Rebels”… I mean how can any Star Wars fan not <squeel> with Princess Leia, Yoda and Darth Vader expanding on the series as we explore the call of the dark side? If you have not been enjoying the series I say you’ve been missing out on a show that appeals to a fanboy/fangirl in a different way than my beloved Clone Wars. The decision to use a different animation style and new characters expands the universe. You don’t have to LOVE Star Wars to be a fan of the action packed series. The first season focused on introducing each character with unique backstories that didn’t feel like a blue print of the original or new trilogy. Instead they forged a new path that is a fun show for all ages. I know it’s on Disney XD so you may think it’s just for kids but once you watch the show you’ll see that it’s a truly all age series perfect to watch as a family or alone. So get ready to enjoy a series that has a darker feel than you’d expect from Disney XD but EXACTLY what you wanted as a Jedi!
