Foodies unite for the COCHON555 return to Los Angeles on March 11th at the Viceroy Santa Monica. The Culinary conception has Five Chefs, Five Pigs, Five Winemakers, Five Somms, Five Barkeeps … all for ONE charity – Piggy Bank!
“The tour is about uplifting small, family farmers through epic culinary moments,” said founder Brady Lowe. “We create and restore connections between the farmer and chef who want to raise, source and serve food raised with purpose and passion. Together, through eating, we become stewards of the good food movement, motivate change and influence our food system from pasture to plate.”
Cochon555 is back on the road and it’s heading to the Viceroy Santa Monica that will be hosting this culinary delight on Sunday, March 11, 2018 with over a hundred prominent chefs, farmers, sommeliers, distillers, brewers and barkeeps celebrating heritage breed pork and local family farming. It’s whole pig cookery with no waste and chefs using their ability to transform dishes that will have you saying ‘souie’ in a bite size taste. Every chef has a 200 pound pig to make a dish to impress the judges and guests at the event and the winner will compete for the regional grand prize to be crowned the ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ of Pork and four day wine & gastronomy in Rioja, Spain. All of the winners will meet at the National Cochon where the best ‘Three Bites’ will compete ‘head to tail’ to be crowned King or Queen for 2018!
Tickets for general admission start at $130; VIP tickets (early admission + exclusive access to cocktail competition and allocated wines and spirits) are $200.
Where: Viceroy Santa Monica 1819 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401
When: Sunday, March 11, 2018
Time: 4 p.m. for VIP entry, 5 p.m. for General Admission
The ultimate aim of Cochon555 is to provide education to chefs and consumers and to create experiences that guests can sink their teeth into: honest food from real farmers. Through education, the Cochon555’s goal is to raise the bar on building a sustainable and profitable relationship for brands and chefs participating in culinary festivals. Every event is a fundraiser for Cochon555’s sister charity, Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of a disaster (flood, fire and disease).
Dishes for the competition are just the beginning — all in, we’re talking about 1,500 pounds of responsibly raised heritage breed pork – guests will also enjoy innovative preparations and cocktails from some of the most critically-acclaimed kitchens and bars in Los Angeles. The Welcome Lounge ushers guests in to the Buffalo Trace Punch Bar and our Signature Starter Bar and Cheese Experience spotlighting Cello, La Quercia, Cypress Grove and a local cheesemonger. Sip sparklers from Dry Soda and Topo Chico and experience craft cocktails including the Manhattan Project featuring premium bourbons from Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, and Breckenridge topped with Luxardo cherries. Learn about pairings at the TarTare Bar aligned to the wines of Antica Napa Valley, Rosé from Whispering Angel paired with organic pâtés and mousses from Les Trois Petits Cochons, a “Taste the City” culinary spotlight featuring the racy portfolio of Wines of Germany and an array of wines grouped under the “5 Winemakers” banner will feature Silver Oak; Pax Wine Cellars; Twomey Cellars and more. Cochon555 will debut a new experience called Trompo “Hora de Familia” in celebration of its first Global Cochon555 event in Mexico City later this year. Guests wanting a sweet bite will enjoy the Pop-Up Pie Shop presented by Mike’s Pies and Swine and Sweets, an innovative spin on dessert spotlighting notable pastry chefs working with Perfect Puree of Napa Valley.
Additionally, running in tandem with tour are a pair of internal competitions – Punch Kings, a whole-bottle punch bowl competition featuring Breckenridge Bourbon and five of the market’s top barkeeps, and Somm Smackdown, a face-off of the nation’s top sommeliers pairing the best wine with heritage pig. A portion of all event proceeds will also benefit the Piggy Bank initiative to support local farms.

Cochon555 is the stand-up tasting reception featuring five chefs cooking five heritage breed pigs for a cause Sunday, March 13 at Viceroy Santa Monica (Official Host & Hotel). The 2016 tour benefits Piggy Bank a sanctuary that will provide free heritage breed pigs and business plans to emerging family farms. You can purchase tickets for the weekend at www.cochon555.com and for a behind the scenes look at the culinary competition, watch Cochon555’s stunning video here http://j.mp/555_Trailer.
I was excited to attend the 2015 Cochon555 and was fascinated by the chef’s creative uses of the entire heritage pig. The weekend had three back-to-back events with Chef Walter Manzke of Republique being crowned the ‘Prince of Porc’. He won the title preparing a whole pig menu featuring the ‘Large Black’ raised by Cook Pigs Ranch. Chef Walter went on to compete for the national title in Denver, CO.
Cochon555 uses heritage breeds and last years’ winner used the ‘Large Black’ a Chinese breed brought to England, known for its taste, pasture foraging skills and overall hardiness. The micro-marbling, short muscle fibers and excellent bellies produce exceptional bacon and moist meat with old world flavor providing Chef Walter ideal meat for his winning menu of five uniquely created delicious bites. Walter’s winning dishes included Pork Belly with Black River Caviar, Jambon-Beurre, Pork Ceviche and Arroz Caldo, a Filipino Rice Porridge. Along with two exclusive dinners hosted by 2014 King of Porc Ray Garcia, Cochon555’s stop in Los Angeles raised awareness for heritage breed pigs raised by family farms. For photos of the 2015 LA event, click http://bit.ly/1EUAf5s.
The Los Angeles flavor-studded weekend supports a great cause by starting with two unique dinners bringing together five guest chefs, world-renowned winemakers and beverage experts to create a multi-course, interactive dining experience to benefit Piggy Bank. Friday kicks off with a Late Night Asian Speakeasy, an all-inclusive guest chef’s dinner party paying homage to Chinese, Sichuan, Korean, Thai and Japanese restaurants. On Saturday, the Chef’s Course Dinner Series is multi-course seated feast featuring five guest chefs cooking courses paired with premium beverages. Tickets to the dinners are available online at $125 per person and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Piggy Bank. On Sunday, the epic feast features celebrity chefs cooking whole hogs in a stand-up reception of epic proportions. Guests are encouraged to buy tickets as the event is expected to sell out earlier this year. Cochon555 is running a 21-day contest, “Can’t We Just Be Friends”, giving away two VIP Tickets worth $400. I’m so excited to cover the first annually Putting for Pups Golf and Gala on Sunday, September 13 at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. Lori is one of the organizers bringing attending to the Dog & Cat meat trade in China. She’s gathered animal lovers from all walks of life for this fundraiser and I’m excited to have gotten a chance for a Q&A with EG Daily. Her name might be familiar as the voice of many animated characters including the Emmy award-winning “Rugrats”, where she is the voice of lead character Tommy Pickles. She can also be heard as the voice of Buttercup in “The Powerpuff Girls” animated series, as Babe in “Babe – Pig in the City”, and as Rudy Tabootie in Nickelodeon’s© “Chalkzone”. Additional voice-over credits include Dizzy in the TV animated series, “Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles”, “Eek the Cat”, “Duck Days”, “Duckman”, “Jungle Cubs”, “Problem Child”, and “Baby Blues”. She also provided the voice of Froggie in the feature film “The Little Rascals”, Bam Bam in “The Flintstones”, and Lorenzo in the Academy Award winning feature film, “Lorenzo’s Oil” as well as being a singer.
How did you get involved with No to Dog Meat?
I’d been hearing about it along with Last chance for animals and other animal support groups.
When did you first learn of the UK based nonprofit?
Lori Alan started posting and doing events for it which was where I became more aware .
What can the average person do to help with No to Dog Meat if they aren’t in the LA metro area?
Come to the event (if in LA), visit the site “Putting for Pups“, learn about it at the NoToDogMeat site! It’s unbearable to look at these Precious animals in Horrific conditions it is so painful to see, it will be hard not to want to do something . Get more awareness. More voices can make a bigger impact .
Are you a dog and/or cat lover?
I am a huge Animal Lover. I tend to lean into dogs more because Im allergic to cats but I still love cats!!! I will stop in the middle of an intersection and block all taffic to help out an animal in need. I have made it one of my missions of my career to be a voice for animals and animal cruelty awareness. I honestly can’t believe at this time how much awful treatment of animals is still going on!
Who’s your best pet friend?
Best Pet friends are my 3 Dogs BBY a two lb Chihuahua, Juju a 5 lb Chihuahua and Bumblebee a Huge 110 lb Rottweiler …Oh we also have many birds that enjoy out property along with a whole family of Lizards that hang out on our Patio furniture 🙂

Anyone want to meet me next Friday, (July 10th) at 7pm in San Diego? I’m excited to do ‘good’ at the first Geeks for Peace event hosted by Morgan Spurlock at the Moniker Warehouse at the 2015 SDCC. The party will be co-hosted by Kevin Smith and Gotham Chopra and will feature special guests including Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Frances Fisher, Greg Grunberg (Heroes), Scott Grimes (American Dad, Justified), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite), Eddie Matos (Finding Carter) and Adrian Pasdar (Heroes, Agents of Shield). The Band From TV will perform and guests will also include an art auction.
The Geeks for Peace event was conceived by Spurlock after he was presented with the Peace Hero Award by the youth of Kids for Peace in 2013 for his commitment to kids, peace, healthy living and using his voice for good. Funds raised during Geeks for Peace will help Kids for Peace support and expand their programs to underserved youth in the U.S., Pakistan, Iraq, Liberia and Kenya.
