Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates blend of hip-hop, commentary and animated comics is the re-introduction of an iconic character. The monthly animated comic series which enriches the story Ta-Nehisi is writing has a new track by Kipp stone called ‘100 Black Panthers’.
“It feels really good having the opportunity to work Marvel,” said Stone. “I have always rocked with Marvel characters when it comes to superheroes, so doing a song that reps Black Panther wasn’t that hard. He stands for what I stand for, solidarity, strength and loyalty.”
Innovative Marvel Video Series Bridges Marvel Comics with Top Music Talent that has stories propelling the mythology of the African hero. Will Ramonda, his surrogate mother recover from the bomb injuries or will her broken body succumb? His sister Shuri has returned from Djalia but is she still herself or something more? A legend or a danger to Black Panther and his people? Marvel’s hero T’Challa, the Black Panther is an exciting series that will keep new and old fans excited and hungry for more after the introduction in the last Avengers film. This series play homage to the classic series I’d read as a kid but with a modern sensibility that shows a an independent African nation with a hero that will defend his people. It’s especially exciting that Marvel has reached out to artists to create original music tied to the video comic book that fans can watch on youtube. I especially like when the artists discuss how the feel about the character and how it fed into the creative process. The image of the Black Panther is so important to many fans of the genre and the Marvel universe is enriched because of the contribution of the writer, artists and musicians. I hope the fans love T’Challa and that the popularity of this series is a catalyst of more comic books and video series representing new diverse characters.
Black Panther #9 is available digitally through the Marvel Digital Comic Shop and at all local comic book retailers. To find a comic shop near you, visit www.comicshoplocator.com or call 1-888-comicbook.
I must admit I was over the moon imagining whom they would cast as this character that I had loved as a little black girl in Iowa that scoured the comic book shop for characters of color (COC). I decided a long time ago that my Doctor wasn’t black but he wasn’t white either I always thought he was Indian or from Asian country that after his injuries decided to explore the medicine of his ancestors (who he had turned away from as he completely assimilated to American culture) so when they announced they had cast Benedict Cumberbatch I was very upset. Disappointed that once again a character that could have no SHOULD have been a man of color was instead cast with one of the whitest men on the screen. Now in his defense he’s a great actor and I’m a huge fan of Benedict. So I weakly decided to forgive Marvel for that choice since I was sure the Ancient One would be an Asian actor either someone US audiences know already like Jet Li or Daniel Dae Kim or Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa but instead they cast Tilda Swinton freaking TILDA SWINTON the whitest woman in the entire world. mind blown I got so mad that I pledged to not see the film EVER! I was done DONE with the two leads. Even after they cast Chiwetel Ejiofor I was no. But than my friends insisted we see the Suicide Squad and I saw Benedict in the cape I started to yearn for the movie. Despite my pledge to stand strong with my Asian Brothers and Sisters against the whitewashing of the first superhero film that SHOULD have been predominately Asian but I still thought I will not see the film BUT will watch it on HBO or DVD.
But happily I’m on a screening list and got to see a sneak preview of the film with a good blerd chick friend. So lucky you get a review of the film.
So I’m going to go on and say one of the things that I found strange ABOUT Dr. Strange. How the holy freck is a movie that takes place in a mythical Asian country that all of the supporting stars are either WHITE or a Black guy (notice I say GUY as in the ONE). Now they do have two supporting Asian actors one is Wong (Benedict Wong) the librarian and an actor who I can’t even find listed on IMDB <URGH>.
But it’s a solid MCU origin story where you get to know Dr. Strange (and yes you will call him DOCTOR) a hotshot surgeon who’s a bit of a talented douche who likes to take high profile cases that will go in his ‘win’ column so that he can keep collecting awards and money to fund a very expensive Manhattan lifestyle. All that changes when he gets in car accident in his BMW (should have sprung for the self driving) where he mangles his precious surgeon hands but no his mind . This starts him on a path to fix his hands so he can get back to his life as a world class surgeon and so be first tries Western medicine (the best money can buy) before finally deciding that he wants to figure out how a former patient of his rehabilitation nurse was able to get back on his feet (I think releasing personal medical records to prove your right is illegal but let’s just go all in and ignore that too). This path takes him half way across the world to and he begins a journey that eventually leads him to Kamar-Taj (Tibet to everyone else). Once he meets the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) or The White Ghost the story picks up the pace and careens to the final showdown with the big bad. Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) is an OK villain seduced by power but despite his being a solid actor I don’t think the part was as fleshed out as I’d have liked and it just felt like so many other villains that he didn’t make that big of an impression. But of course as a nod to diversity he gets a black bestie Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and enigmatic Asian guy Wong (Benedict Wong) who seems to a stick in the mud ‘follow the rules’ type of guy both characters seem to be all about making Dr. Strange a better white superior to all . Did I mention that they justified the Ancient One with a throwaway line of how she’s Gaelic and doesn’t talk about how she got to be the leader .
I don’t want to throw shade but Benedict get a major tan because he’s not as pearly as he normally looks!
At least we have the Black Panther … but my Asian Brothers and Sisters get bupkis with this film. I felt like a kid when I’d watch TV or movies desperately looking for someone who looked like me that were always either in the background or were the hooker or drug dealer. Things have changed but comic book movies still aren’t moving fast enough for me.

Marvel comics is introducing the Black Panther to a new generation of fans with the new spotlight video series. It’s timed with Black Panther on the big screen in the Captain America: Civil War (out Thursday, May 5th) where a lot of people might not know the guy in the all black body suit!
Marvel is showing comic book love as they prepare for his breakout movie in a few years with this tie in with the characters best selling comic book series. This video series merges animation, comic book, narration and commentary for a immersion into his world. It’s a great addition for old fans as well as new that don’t know his backstory.
If you haven’t had a chance to grab Black Panther #1 by The Atlantic national correspondent and National Book Award winner, Ta-Nehisi Coates, accompanied with outstanding art by Brian Stelfreeze that debuted as the best-selling comic for the month of April. Head to your local comic book shop and grab one! It looks gorgeous and is a stunning story for a character that had been put on a back burner by fans who forgot how cool the Black Panther is!
Once you pick up your copy watch the new video produced by Bow & Arrow and bookmark the page for a monthly release. These new bold hip-hop driven animated videos will present not only Black Panther but his kingdom of Wakanda and his place in the Marvel Universe. It’s time for an all new audience to know this hero who has an origin story unlike any other. The iconic visuals of his costume as well as the vistas of his village looking over his people has always struck a cord within my heart.
So I am very happy that every month fans can enjoy a new “Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet” video that will coincide with the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Black Panther. The “Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet” videos will introduce new and old fans to Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Panther series with commentary from Mr. Coates, motion graphics and a entrancing hip-hop score from some of the world’s largest hip-hop acts.
The addition of this video series with a hip hop feel .. hmmm would Marvel’s Super Hero T’Challa, the Black Panther be a hip-hop guy or more jazz with sharp edges .. I’ll let you be the judge of that after watching the series and getting a feel for the character but to me he’s Miles Davis a cool cat who walks his own path in dark smokey rooms!

I didn’t realize that I would want a Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War t-shirt or sweatshirt after seeing the movie but Araca Group is reading my mind with this great selection that will be so convenient after seeing the film! I do love easy impulse buys and the Limited Edition ‘Live Event’ Marvel’s items at select stores has my geek collector senses tingling (did you see the Spiderman reference spidey senses) with commemorative ticket and tour t-shirt. The popups will be available at select retail locations in movie theaters in the continental US selling eleven limited-time products of the ‘Battle Begins’ collections.
I’m already drooling over the limited addition ticket but the artwork will be unique to the popups available 88 locations across North America. Hmm I wonder if my friend up in Canada will want me to pick something up! I know he loves Marvel and the choices between t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats with a custom design for the release of the movie will be popular for any fan even if your more team Scarlet Witch. I hope that the designs include some of my favorite characters that aren’t getting all the merch love they deserve! Check out thebattlebeginsmerchandise.com for specific locations to get your geek fashion on and don’t hesitate since I’m sure certain designs will fly onto our bodies.
“We aim to expand the movie going experience by bringing fans unexpected products in a unique shopping experience” said Michael Rego, Chief Executive Officer of The Araca Group. “We are thrilled to offer fans limited-time Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War merchandise for the ultimate live-event experience.”
The Pop-Up Retail Locations will open May 6th in theater lobbies for a limited time, so don’t wait to get your Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War products before they are gone.

This is a Geek Gift to be promised over the holiday season since it will not be released until April but it’s one gorgeous gift for any Star Wars or Al Williamson fan. IDW will be releasing the late artist Al Williamson’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back stories in 2016. The collection will include issues #39 – #44 of the monthly Marvel Star Wars Comic, Star Wars #50, #98 and the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi mini series will be included.
The Artist’s Edition will be 160 pages in hardcover (14×21) perfect for display or just for someone’s collection of art books.
“Al loved drawing Star Wars,” said Williamson’s wife, Cori Williamson. “It’s a science fiction swashbuckler, the kind of story that really appealed to his sensibilities. As a lover and collector of classic comic-book and comic strip art, I think he would have been thrilled to see his work presented in this format.”
George Lucas commented after Williamson’s passing in 2010, “I was thrilled to be able to have Al depicting those early extended Star Wars adventures for the comic books and newspapers. In capturing the actors who portrayed the characters, he brought the feeling of the films to the page as few other artists have been able to do.”
You may not know Al William’s name but if you love comic books/graphic novels you’ve seen his work starting back in 1950 with EC Comics. In the 1960s he took Alex Raymond’s classic comic strip creation Flash Gordon to the comic book with his iconic reimagining. He also worked on comic strips that included X-9: Secret Agent Corrigan and the Star Wars newspaper strip. His work earned him an Eisner Award and he was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic-Book Hall of Fame in 2000.
“The collaboration between IDW and Marvel has produced some of the most exceptional collections of reprinted original comic book material ever to be offered,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Al Williamson’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Artist’s Edition of the original Marvel Comics film adaptation is a brightly glowing star within the galaxy of immaculate Star Wars content.”

Did you see what Rodriguez said to TMZ (video details) about rather she’d been cast as the new Green Lantern:
I think it’s so stupid for everybody — because of this whole, you know, ‘minorities in Hollywood’ thing…But it’s so stupid, it’s like, stop stealing all the white people’s superheroes. Make up your own, you know what I’m saying? Like, what’s up with that?
This is going to be short and sweet. As a nerd girl who grew up reading comic books back in the day I would like to tell Michelle she’s wrong that People of Color (POC), Women and LGBT (I added that) need to create their own mythology and heroes. We are creating our own characters but we have the same love for Superman, Wonderwoman, Batman, Aquaman and the Green Lantern (well I like him have never been super into that character) as the people who created them. Even more importantly Stan Lee himself (the GOD of comic books) says he’s HAPPY to have his characters evolve to keep up with society well what they heck now I’ve taken a little creative license paraphrase on it but click on link for direct quote (MTV Splashpage). These are fictional characters and as such as the current artists change them to reflect new storylines to keep them fresh well yes they might change color or sexuality or gender and that’s OK since Hollywood has a bad habit of whitewashing characters all the time. I can’t say how frustrated I am when they decide to cast a blonde woman in Akira or that it’s always OK to blind cast as long as it’s to white people. I like to see people who look like me reflected not just as background standins but as supporting cast members and STARS! She might be one of the chosen favorite few who get roles that normally would go to a white woman or man but she needs to acknowledge her privilege of being a light complexioned beautiful hispanic woman. The same as Zoe is getting color blind casting and is treated like an ‘exotic’ beauty as opposed as being considered Black or Latino. It seems as if some of these actors who are the chosen few to be able to transcend their race instead of helping others are just enjoying their privilege and leaving the rest behind. So instead of standing with the power class why don’t you stand with you fans? Why don’t you stand with other actors who want to be judged on talent instead of dismissed because they are Black, Mexican, Korean, Jewish and don’t look ‘white’ enough to be one of the chosen few? I say SHAME on you Michelle and Jennifer Lopez and Zoe Saldana and Anthony Mackie (to name a few) for not supporting other actors! I’m frustrated that when they have a new movie out all of a sudden they are down with brown and will give interviews to Latina Magazine, Ebony and sites to reach out to fellow POCs to get our dollar bills but they aren’t with us to voice that their should be more inclusion. Instead I hear them say that color doesn’t matter and it doesn’t for THEM! Since they are the lucky exception to the rules and as long as they get their money they are OK with it. But yet they still want OUR support to buy tickets for their movies but don’t want to be considered as one of ‘us’. So they can try to hoard all the good but eventually their fans will find actors who do WHO will be honest about not only their privilege but that image matters. Seeing a hero that looks like ‘me’ is life affirming and Hollywood better wise up to the changing demographics of not only the US but the world. White might right to them but GREEN is what funds the business! Oh and by the way Michelle if you don’t want to role am sure that a lot of kickass women of color can take the role and OWN it so step aside!
