Another day another Friday and this week B&N is offering us a great selection of a collection of short stories to a new CBS comedy (is it still a comedy if it’s not funny?) the Mccarthys. ehh people seem to love Mike & Molly so what do I know!

November 7, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays book selection is GATSBY GIRLS by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a series of short stories inspired by his wife Zelda serialized by the Saturday Evening Post and published for the first time with the original, full illustrations and cover art. Fans of the immensely popular Jazz Age author of “The Great Gatsby” and “Tender is the Night” will fawn over these eight stories inspired by the figure of the Flapper woman, an icon of the 1920s.

She was an impulsive, fashionable and carefree 1920s woman who embodied the essence of the Gatsby Girl— F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda. As Fitzgerald said, “I married the heroine of my stories.” All of the eight short stories contained in this collection were inspired by Zelda.

Fitzgerald, one of the foremost writers of American fiction, found early success as a short story writer for the most widely read magazine of the early 20th century — the Saturday Evening Post. Fitzgerald’s stories, first published by the Post between 1920 and 1922, brought the Jazz Age and the “flapper” to life and confirmed that America was changing faster than ever before. Women were bobbing their hair, drinking and flirting shamelessly, and Fitzgerald brought these exciting Gatsby Girls to life in the pages of the Post.

November 7, 2014:  Today’s Free Fridays app selection is BALLTASTIC BLAST, a simple yet addictive game for ages 4 and up.
It’s a new take on the original Balltastic Boombastic game. Both of these titles are designed for family-friendly fun! Simple enough for kids to play, but challenging enough for adults… or is it the other way around in your household already?

November 7, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays video selection is the pilot episode of the series THE MCCARTHYS– the new CBS series about a working-class Boston family with a long-running athletic legacy.

The McCarthys are a close-knit, sports-crazed Boston family whose somewhat athletically challenged son, Ronny, is chosen by his father to be his assistant high school basketball coach, much to the surprise of his more qualified siblings. Ronny wants nothing more than to move away, join the singles scene and find a partner. His distraught mother, Marjorie is not upset that her favorite son is gay, but that he wants to leave Boston and his family. Ronny’s plans change, however, when his politically incorrect and outspoken father, Arthur stuns everyone with his choice for an assistant. Touched by his father’s offer, Ronny embarks on a completely different future and he can be sure that his loving family, including his twin brothers Sean and Gerard and his sister Jackie, are going to have a very vocal opinion about it.

We hope you enjoy the Free Fridays selections this week, NOOK blog community! Deepest apologies for the price mishap this morning.

Free Fridays: Beneath a Navajo Moon + The Shoemaker and the Elves + Intruders

September 5, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays book selection is BENEATH A NAVAJO MOON— a compelling novel of love, crime and tradition set against the iconic Navajo landscape.

What happens when danger and love collide under a Navajo moon? The search for a woman who disappeared in 1906 has lead cultural anthropologist Erin Dawson to Cedar Canyon, where the iconic terrain of red rock walls and mesas keep Navajo traditions — and maybe criminal evidence — well hidden.

When Erin’s search leads her to cross paths with tribal policeman Adam Silverhorn, it’s hardly love at first sight. But everywhere she turns, Adam is already there. Fighting their feelings for each other, the two are suddenly thrust into a battle far more dangerous — a common quest to rout an insidious drug cartel that has spawned the recent rise in gang violence on the reservation. Adam’s position of authority gives Erin a rare glimpse into Navajo life few outsiders like her ever see — and into a crime ring that no one dares to imagine.

As danger mounts, Adam and Erin begin to wonder if they will live to tell how they really feel.

Based on Michael Marshall Smith’s 2007 novel and written by Glen Morgan,INTRUDERS is a paranormal thriller about a secret society devoted to chasing immortality by seeking refuge in the bodies of others. Ex-cop Jack Whalen has escaped a dark, violent past for a seemingly quiet life with his wife, Amy. When she goes missing, Jack starts an investigation that forces him to confront his past.

Lisa Carter, the author of this week’s Free Fridays book selection, recommends ANGEL FALLSby Connie Mann:

“Connie Mann renders a vivid portrayal of the plight of street kids in exotic Brazil in a captivating adventure chock full of romantic tension, physical survival and emotional conflict. As the director of a Brazilian orphanage and an ex-Army Ranger team to save the life of one small child, they struggle to overcome their dark and broken pasts. The characters are riveting and complex. The non-stop, action-packed, page-turning suspense will grip readers until the heart-pounding conclusion.”

Free Fridays: All He Saw Was the Girl + English Speed Reading

Posted by  × April 4, 2014 at 7:37 am

April 4, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays book selection is ALL HE SAW WAS THE GIRL by Peter Leonard (son of Elmore) — an intriguing crime novel Carl Hiaasen called “Great storytelling.” Happy Friday, and happy reading!

Rome: McCabe and Chip, two American exchange students, are about to become embroiled with a violent street gang, a beautiful Italian girl, and a flawed kidnapping plan.

Detroit: Sharon Vanelli’s affair with Joey Palermo, a Mafia enforcer, is about to be discovered by her husband, Ray, a secret service agent.

Brilliantly plotted and shot through with wry humor, ALL HE SAW WAS THE GIRL sees these two narratives collide in the backstreets of Italy’s oldest city.

April 4, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays app selection is ENGLISH SPEED READING – a handy app that’s perfect for book lovers!

Learn how to speed read — and actually remember what you read! With ENGLISH SPEED READING, you’ll learn to use your peripheral vision to quickly grasp large text portions and  increase your speed of perception by means of what’s called “tachistoscopic recognition.”

”John Grisham has written another beauty in SYCAMORE ROW,” says today’s Free Fridays author Peter Leonard. “He brings Jake Brigance back from A Time to Kill in what is a highly-charged, tremendously suspenseful morality tale that’s impossible to put down. I highly recommend it.”

In celebration of today’s Free Fridays offering, Peter Leonard’s publisher, The Story Plant, is discounting six additional titles featuring great characters to just $1.99 this weekend:

ANYTHING, Michael Baron

Acclaimed author Michael Baron again draws readers into a world of deep emotion, compelling relationships, and heartfelt humor — and this time, he adds a touch of fantasy. Ken and Melissa are at the dawn of a magnificent life together. While searching for the perfect wedding present for Melissa, Ken stumbles into a mysterious shop. There, he is given the magical opportunity – to look in on Melissa when she was a girl — what seems like an incredible blessing. Until he discovers a terrible secret in Melissa’s past….

GOODNIGHT, BRIAN, Steven Manchester

Fate was working against little Brian Mauretti. The food that was meant to nourish him was poisoning him instead, and the doctors said the damage was devastating and absolute. Fate had written off Brian. But fate didn’t count on a woman as determined as Brian’s grandmother, Angela DiMartino – who everyone knew as Mama. Loving her grandson with everything she had, Mama endeavored to battle fate. Fate had no idea what it was in for.

FORTUNATE SON, David Marlett

Meet James Annesley, son of 18th Century Ireland. Though you may have never heard his name before, his story has already touched you in profound ways. Now, for the first time, novelist David Marlett brings that incredible story to life.

DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, Julian Iragorri and Lou Aronica

This evocative, moving, and gorgeously detailed novel is the story of Alex Soberano, a contemporary man in crisis. A successful New York businessman, Alex finds it difficult to embrace joy and accept love. When his life threatens to boil over, he escapes for a brief respite on the West Coast. What waits for him there is something he never could have imagined.

BORN & BRED, Peter Murphy

BORN & BRED is the first novel in the Life & Times Trilogy, a cycle of three novels that will chart the course of one star-crossed life. It is a work of vibrant imagination from a poetic novelist of the first order.

Author Laurel Dewey — known for her gritty crime thriller series featuring Detective Jane Perry — has created a dynamic, funny, romantic, heartbreaking and controversial novel that will both enlighten readers and challenge them with its unique and timely subject matter.

I LOVE Free Fridays courtesy of Barnes and Noble!  I don’t always take the free book they offer since some of them don’t look that interesting but this is very appealing to my mystery fan side so what’s to lose??? Nothing it’s free dangit!

Today’s Free Fridays book selection is Love Thy Neighbor by Mark Gilleo – a conspiracy thriller that begs the question, “Do you ever truly know your neighbors?”

Graduate student Clark Hayden spends most of his holidays consoling his mother over the recent loss of his father, and worries about her diminished mental state. Turns out though, his time away from school will be much more eventful than he ever could have anticipated.

Finding himself ensnared within a terrorist organization whose headquarters are stationed across the street from his childhood home, Clark realizes it’s up to him to save his neighborhood – and the world – from the splinter cell’s deadly intentions.

Today’s Free Fridays app selection is The Bad Girl’s Journal by Bad Girl Swirl. This fun, cute journal app is inspired by Cameron Tuttle’s bestselling Bad Girl’s Guides. You can organize your entries by topic, log in your mood for the day, switch journal themes, insert and share photos, and more! And since we know journals can be very private affairs, there’s the option to hide posts or “burn” particularly incendiary entries – just press a button and watch your entry go up in flames!

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Mark recommends:

All Over but the Shoutin’ by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Rick Bragg is one of my favorite books. Rick Bragg’s use of the English language, the rich details of a hard-scrabble life, and the description of real-life characters most people could only dream up, makes this book a must read.  His journey from backwoods Alabama to Harvard will make you both laugh and cry.

1.3 Free Friday Special:

Tee hee this week’s free selection is a real bosom heaving sexy romance with British nobility and of course a scoundrel with a heart of gold!  Just the stuff that I read all through high school to my great disappointment that I never found my own prince in the Iowa farmlands of my hometown!

Today’s Free Fridays book selection is The Seduction of Lady Phoebe by Ella Quinn – a classic Regency romance full of wit, playfulness and a sizzling chemistry.
Phoebe Stanhope tries very hard to be a true Lady of noble standing, but she’s just having too much fun participating in sharp-witted banter and riding her purebred horse over the barrows and through the valleys of 18th-century England. She’s even managed to avoid a rather large list of potential suitors – that is, until she meets Marcus Finley and her world gets turned upside-down completely.
Marcus can’t deny the spark between him and Phoebe, but he has a dark past that he’ll do anything to avoid sharing with her – even keeping the secret of a betrayal that years ago turned Phoebe’s heart cold against the idea of love. Can Phoebe maintain her independent spirit while falling for Marcus, and can he convince her of his present worth even while his past continues to haunt him?

Today’s Free Fridays app selection is Buddha Finger by Marmalade, an exciting action game app that will bring out the warrior in you! In a fun twist on the kung-fu gaming genre, Buddha Finger transforms you into a young martial arts fan who meets a sensei of the highest order  – one who teaches you the art of fighting so that you can save your Interpol agent brother from a shadowy crime underworld.

Roundhouse kick your way through 61 levels of Pick up n’ Play gameplay with an engaging storyline and awesome visual effects – plus leaderboards to show off your kung-fu skills to other martial arts hopefuls.

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Ella recommends:

If you’ve never read Mary Jo Putney’s books, you’re missing out! She is one of my must-read authors. Her latest release, book #5 in her Lost Lords series,Sometimes a Rogue, is a wonderful example of her storytelling abilities. Her writing is elegant and her historical accuracy is spot on. Once you start, you’ll be hooked forever.

Rob had no idea what he was getting himself into when he volunteered to rescue Sarah who had saved her heavily pregnant twin sister from an anti-British terrorist group and was taken instead. The sizzling, sensual tension between these two strong-willed people as they race across Ireland to escape was done with a skilled hand, and their happily ever after was all one could wish for.

Not only is Mary Jo a great writer—having won several RITAs and other awards, including Romance Writers of America Life Time Achievement Award—she is a fantastic person as well. I had the privilege and the pleasure of meeting her this past summer, and she immediately offered to help me solve a problem I was having.

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Yvonne recommends:

I’m always looking for a good mystery with memorable characters, and Alice Duncan’s cozy, Strong Spirits, fits the bill. In it we are introduced to Daisy Gumm Majesty, a self-described faux spiritualist who helps her wealthy Pasadena clients by way of seances and tarot readings. Her husband Billy is a wounded WWI vet who doesn’t approve of Daisy’s work as a medium, but she has to support her family while solving the shady doings at the house of one of her best clients.

Strong Spirits has the period feel of life in 1920’s California, and we see it with a thoroughly enjoyable Daisy as our guide.

Well it looks like it’s a bit of a fantasy friday from B&N with Ingrid Paulson’s YA Valkrie Rising ebook that is another contender to the Twilight Fantasy crown.  I’ve never been a fan of the series but I’m in the minority with all the money it made for the author, studio and stars!   I loved reading Norse tales in high school so am familiar with the mythology.  I’m hoping this will have a bit of a feminist bent to it and not the ‘woe is me’ I’m a helpless chick most of these movies seem to have as the ideal vision of young women.

Of course the translation app is useful for anyone of any age especially when FREE!  So grab a book and an app before you have have to pay and look at the authors other novels if you like this first taste of the series.

Young men are disappearing throughout the village, and the normally friendly townsfolk are suddenly avoiding Ellie like the plague, claiming she’s a Valkyrie: a mythological female warrior who recruits young men as soldiers for the Norse god Odin’s undead army.
Can Ellie accept her newly-discovered identity, as well as use her ancient powers for the good of humankind? Find out in this unique and captivating teen fantasy novel.
