Receptions, Screenings, and Panel Convos with TV’s Hottest Stars September 6 to 16, 2017

Have you made a date for the 2017 Paley Fest Previews from September 6 – 16 at the Paley Center for Media Los Angeles? This year they are welcoming new and returning series from comedy to drama to standup. What new series are you fanning for already or are curious to learn more about? If you didn’t purchase your tickets already some of the most popular panels have already sold out BUT if your a Paley Member (or want to join) you can purchase the ‘must see’ panels.

My must see panel is the Mindy Project (it’s the final season AND they have a exhibition of costumes from the series), Future Man, the Orville, Ghosted, Mayor, Big Mouth, the Comedy Get Down and as a 80s kid must see the reboot of Dynasty (with a very sexy young cast … it is on the CW).

I’m a TV Fan in general so love to attend the Paley Fest where I’ve seen previews of series that I may have missed that I enjoyed so make sure you venture beyond your usual ‘type’ and try something new!

Leave a comment below on the panel you’d love to see or what show will be the first for a full season order!

I’m so excited that I will be able to attend the final day of the Paley Center Fall TV Preview!

TIBRINA HOBSON/FILMMAGIC

I’m beside myself that I was able to swing a ticket to the sold out writers of the Mindy Project Panel (Hulu) and want to have my style game on POINT!

I mean who doesn’t love Mindy’s fashion on the series? It’s always brightly colored, body conscious AND shows off her quirky personality. Normally TV series don’t influence my style but Mindy’s brown (like me) and curvy (like me but on a smaller scale). Of course I’m talking about Salvador Perez, a celebrated costume designer who’s worked with the casts of CastleMoonlightVeronica Mars and Pitch Perfect.

Image result for Mindy Project styleThe mix of texture and color that he uses on her curvy body has allowed me to imagine wearing outfits like that but on a less expensive scale! Since I’m attending the final night of the 2016 Fall TV Preview am torn between a couple of dresses and outfits to mix and match. I’m coming straight from work so can’t wear anything TOO zany but would love for my fangirl/fanboy nation to suggest what I should wear to impress Mindy and the rest of the panel. Of course my FAVORITE is the girly bubble gum pink suit! The first time I saw this outfit I gasped I wanted it soo bad!

Ah well enough Mindy Project Fashion Porn. Now for my outfits! I’m torn between wearing white blouse (like a jacket) with either the polka dot dress or one of the skirts with a t-shirt. Am I Mindy Project worthy??? Leave a comment below about what I should wear tomorrow and your favorite Mindy Style! ……

Event ImageWho’s excited about the new fall series coming to Fox? MEEEEE

Well if you are a TV nut like myself and are in Los Angeles you can attend the PaleyFest with sneak previews of the first episodes of some of the shows that have fanboys and fangirls pretty excited. Fox is bringing a slate that will compliment returning series as well as bringing new fans to the network with a mix of original series and movies inspired by classic films. I’m very curious about Pitch a series created by Dan Fogelman & Rick Singer starring Kylie Bunbury who’s character is the first woman playing major league baseball breaking the glass baseball diamond. I’m planning to catch the first episode to support a series that reminds me of my beloved Sleepy Hollow (namely a lead black actress not that it’s supernatural mystery). The other series that fans get to have a panel is Lethal Weapon from a movie franchise from the 80’s that I never thought would be rebooted as a TV series. It’s starring Damon Wayans, Sr. and Clayne Crawford in a buddy cop series that has to walk a fine line between humor and gritty cop drama. Damon has come far from his days as a comic and has turned in good performances over the years so the question will be if the two guys have the chemistry necessary to make the show work. Now as a geek the series that has me salivating is Son of Zorn that will join my Sunday Fox animation domination. From the moment I saw the snippets at San Diego Comic Con I felt it was a great addition to Sundays! The voices are great and the mix of live action with animation looks like such fun! I was hoping they’d have a panel but hopefully I’ll see them at Wondercon or SDCC next year! The Exorcist is closing out the Fox night and am not a horror or exorcist fan I must admit I’ve never seen the movie or any real desire it looks horrifying! Sadly I won’t be covering the red carpet but plan to watch all of the new shows!

Are you heading to PaleyFest Fox Night? Let me know in the comments below what show you are looking forward to seeing this fall either a returning favorite or a new show!

I’m a huge fan of the Mindy Kaling Project and when it first premiered on Fox I was very curious about a female led series starring a woman who didn’t look like a lead cast member on TV normally. I fell in love with the zany series as I followed a woman that was like me. Doing OK with the career but love life was a complete diseaster always choosing the wrong guy for the wrong reason.

Thursday, September 15 – HULU
PaleyFest Fall TV Previews Special Event:
The Mindy Project: Inside the Writers Room
Mindy Kaling, Creator, Executive Producer and “Mindy Lahiri”
Ike Barinholtz, “Morgan Tookers”
Matt Warburton, Executive Producer

Image result for mindy project huluWhen Fox canceled the series I yelled <boo> from the rooftops the show wasn’t perfect but it was fun and one of the few series led by an Asian actress! When Hulu took the opportunity to continue the series I expected a big change from budget per episode to more freedom to explore adult subject matters. Hulu has delivered more a signature series that keeps me subscribing but no binging since it’s released weekly like network TV.

PaleyFest Previews: The Mindy Project-Writer’s Room is SOLD OUT

I’ve always wanted to chat with not just the cast and producers but the writers of the series that embraces a quirky curvy woman who is confident and sexual. Well the Paley Center has answered my prayers! This year the Paley Fest opening Fall TV Preview 2016 will be a talk with the writers of the series.

I want to chat with them about the major cast change of Danny and Mindy splitting up to accommodate his no longer being a FT cast member. Last season they explored co-parenting with humor and the sharp edges of two strong willed people still trying to control the other. I think the sixth season should be a great arc and able to focus on not only new regular cast members but more of her co-workers at the clinic. I really like the storyline of the egg clinic but it can be a story suck with not that much payback so hope they cut it down even further so that we can enjoy her interacting with dating, navigating being a single divorced mom and friendship. Every woman needs her crew!

If I get on the red carpet I want to ask about how they will handle Danny as a recurring character. Will he be written out or use text/phone calls/notes to keep the story of co-parenting. Does Hulu allow free reign with humor and adult subject matter or have they ever looked at a script and said that’s a step TOO far?!? Will you age up the child to create more comedy situations with him going to school and being a rebellious kid? I know that they have shoehorned a connection with the new doctor but I’d like her to be back on the market and dating ‘United Nations’ style! It’s hilarious when Mindy skewers the casual racism within POC communities. I’d love to have more episodes of Mindy interacting with the Indian and Asian communities with episodes of how Asian’s rank themselves, introducing her son to other interracial kids/families, a ‘funny’ episode about profiling and her exploring more Indian centric episodes with her family. I LOVE her brother he’s hilarious, handsome and can sing! Have they ever thought of a Bollywood/Musical episode with original music and lots of dancing! I love that Mindy loves her curvy body and that she’s a confidant sexual woman. For instance a suit makes you think of a line or episode?

That’s a lot of questions but I am very curious about the writers of this zany series. What do you think I should ask the stars and writers? Leave the question below…..

This year it is taking place September 8-13 in Beverly Hills (465 N. Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210). For those of you that don’t know what PaleyFest is, it’s a week long festival that features premiere screenings and panel conversations with stars from upcoming  Fall TV shows. Past events have featured hit shows including Black-ish, Jane the Virgin, Scandal, and Arrow. The Paley Center in New York will host a free PaleyFest screening September 10-11. HULU will also air clips and full length discussions sometime in September.

PaleyFest features sneak peeks into upcoming fall shows from ABC, CBS, The CW, El Rey, FOX, and NBC. The line up for this year’s PaleyFest offers peeks into new shows like Notorious, Pitch, No Tomorrow, and Frequency. Some panelists featured are Mandy Moore, Damon Wayans, Sr., and Dermot Mulroney. I’m very excited for to see Frequency. It’s about a detective that discovers she can speak to her deceased father through a ham radio, so they solve murder cases together and struggle with the butterfly effect. Frequency is set to air October 5 on The CW. I’m also interested in upcoming FOX show Pitch. It’s about a young female pitcher becoming the first woman to play in Major League Baseball for the San Diego Padres. As a softball pitcher I am interested in seeing how everything plays out in the new show. It will air September 22.

It’s nearly impossible to have never watched a Dick Wolf show before. Just turn on your TV any day of the week and there’s sure to be a Law & Order or Chicago [P.D., Med or Fire] episode on.

But it’s totally believable that you might not have ever seen the man behind these prolific procedural crime shows: His name is Dick Wolf.

Dick Wolf, legendary producer, has been bringing procedural TV shows to your living for over two decades.

Dick Wolf, legendary producer, has been bringing procedural TV shows to your living for over two decades.

And he was the featured guest at the Paley Fest’s tenth event held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Saturday that featured “An Evening with Dick Wolf.” Wolf was joined on stage alongside nine actors from his most beloved shows was the tenth event of the PaleyFest.

Ice-T represented the cast of Law & Order: SVU, while Jason Beghe and Sophia Bush showed out for Chicago P.D. Newcomers to Chicago Med Colin Donnell and Torrey DeVitto sat alongside their co-workers S. Epatha Merkerson (who we originally show as a NYPD lieutenant Anita Van Buren on Law & Order) and Oliver Platt. Chicago Fire’s Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney held down the fort for their Wolf TV show.

Though every actor said they came to know Wolf in different respects, either appearing as extras (sometimes murder victims) on his previous shows, Colin Donnell put it best by saying “it felt like winning the lottery” when you get the call that you’ll have a permanent role on a Wolf show.

Chicago Med's Torrey DeVitto is one of the newest stars on Dick Wolf's shows.

The question on everyone’s mind that night was “How does Wolf do it? How does he keep making hit crime shows?”

Was it his “ripped-from-the-headlines” plotlines? Or his star cast?

Merkerson added her opinion, saying, “What’s so good about Dick Wolf shows [is] you sit down to be entertained, but walk away being educated.”

S. Epatha Merkerson has acted on both Dick Wolf's Law & Order and Chicago series.

During the conversation, moderated by radio personality Gary Bryan from KRTH 101, Wolf explained when he first started producing for TV in the late 1980s, many told him no one would want to sit through hour-long shows. For all of us who have binged watched episodes of Law & Order: SVU on Netflix know that that’s not the case.

Wolf said that in his more than 20 years of having his TV shows on air he has employed more than 40,000 actors — an amazing feat.

Audience members were glad to hear that another favorite actor will soon be the lead in his next procedural drama. Wolf revealed that actor Carl Weathers, best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky series, will be the lead in Chicago Justice, the latest installment to the Chicago series. Weathers will play the State’s Attorney in the Windy City. Filming starts this week.

It’s still to be seen how successful Chicago Justice will be, but if it’s like any other Dick Wolf show, it’ll keep our eyes glued to our TV screens, praying that they’ll be a marathon on soon.

The Better Call Saul cast took to the red carpet at PaleyFest 2016 on March 12th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Bromantic co-creators Peter Gould (Creator, EP) and Vince Gilligan (Showrunner, EP, Writer) showed their excitement about their flourishing Breaking Bad spinoff (airing Monday nights on AMC)

BFFs Michael Mando and Rhea Seehorn were in hot pursuit, followed by the rest of the Saul cast (as seen in the video).

Variety media strategist, Debra Birnbaum, praised the first season for its “depth, humor and heartbreak”. Before the audience of hardcore Saul fans could collect themselves, we were surprisingly treated to a first look at the newest episode, before the rest of the world could lay eyes on it!
The booming and bumping of Atmos technology was palpable inside the Dolby Theatre – it was a real treat to see each brilliantly calculated shot matched with such expert sound design from the Saul creative team.

The crowd at PaleyFest roared its approval in sheer delight and surprise as a surprise guest appearance of Mark Margolis (Tio Salamanca) lit up the screen! Even title star Bob Odenkirk (“Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman”) was a little shocked, watching it all back: “I can’t remember what happens in these episodes.”

Peter Gould tied up the dynamic PaleyFest conversation with his personal discipline mantra on integrating Breaking Bad characters: “The difficulty is not to overdo it…to have characters walking in the background or having mud splashed on them as Jimmy drives by.”

Fans of Better Call Saul will surely enjoy the new season, which the writers can promise is full of difficulties between Jimmy and Chuck (Michael McKean), and an ensuing struggle between Jimmy and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) to re-kindle their romance and reclaim their own narratives. Her character’s “I save me” line is a huge slap in the face for Jimmy, who will evidently go through a lot more until Peter Gould and Vince Gilligan see fit to transition him to sleazy fan-favorite, Saul Goodman! Will it happen anytime soon?

In the words of Peter Gould himself: “I hate to say it, but there is no master plan.”

I can’t deny the illicit delight from my secret love of Hulu’s Difficult People a series about nothing but unpleasant dysfunctional people in NYC. I’m very excited that it’s been added to the 2016 Paleyfest LA with Julie Klausner, Billy Eichner, Andrea Martin, James Urbaniak, Cole Escola, Scott King attending to discuss the series. It’s the modern Seinfeld that I didn’t realize I wanted to see until I was seduced from the very fist episode. I mean really who doesn’t want to eat after a funeral??? Such a fun show for the inner meanie in us all! So binge on Difficult People an original comedy on  Hulu and  join me at the PaleyFest LA for the panel on 3/18 tickets are available on Ticketmaster.

The Hulu series follows two bitter failed comics Julie Kessler (Julia Klausner) and Billy Epstein (Billy Eichner) as the see other ‘lesser talented’ people make it as they get older. Julie lives with her boyfriend Arthur Tack (James Urbaniak) who works at PBS and Billy works at a cafe owned by Nate (Derrick Baskin) and Denise (Gabourey Sidibe). Matthew (Cole Escolar) is Denise’s pretend son/best friend is a waiter who’s getting lucky breaks because he’s young, cute and funny. Julia’s mother a successful psychiatrist Marilyn Kessler (Andrea Martin) is the foundation of her esteem issues with little cuts of verbal disapproval aka looking for a hanger (Mommy Dearest). Each episode is self sabotage on why they didn’t and haven’t made it with making enemies left and right because they are unpleasant as hell!
