When asked about the various social issues the show addressed in the first season, Seth MacFarlane – creator of the Star Trek inspired television show The Orville – stated that “good science fiction should be topical.”

“The reaction to that episode [Season 1 Episode 3 “About A Girl”] initially was… a lot of weird hostility about it. ‘Who do you think you are writing about this stuff?’ The reaction

from the fans was the opposite.”

The Paley Center for Media hosts PaleyFest once a year to honor exceptional television series. Held on March 17, The Orville panel is the second event of the festival, second to Barbra Streisand herself. The panels begin with an episode screening and are followed by a Q&A between the moderator, creators and cast, and the audience.

It’s true that the fan favorite series does not shy away from difficult conversations, having covered religion, xenophobia, sexism, and other touchy topics in the first season. It’s also true that science fiction as a genre was created to entertain intellectually and leave the viewer with questions about societal norms (Shoutout to the Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy class I’m taking this semester!) “In this genre there really should be nothing off-limits,” MacFarlane concludes, citing The Twilight Zone, which is known for it’s social commentary. My personal favorite of the cast, actress Penny Johnson added that “fans are smarter than people think,” and could, therefore, handle discussion on tough topics. J.Lee,

who plays Lt. John LaMarr said, “I like the fact that we throw a lot of stuff at the wall…we talk about stuff with a camera on that we all talk about anyway.”

The Orville is an endearing series, and the panel was a delightful insight into the casts’ personalities ties and dedication to the series. Here are some key moments:

“More tongue!”

While filming episode 9 “Cupid’s Dagger,” Johnson was told by MacFarlane to do “more tongue,” MacFarlane ended the story with, ”Needless to say, my time was up.”

Chad wanted to sit on the egg

Chad L. Coleman, who plays Bortus’ partner Klyden, asked MacFarlane why Bortus sat on the egg to hatch their child when Klyden was the more traditionally domestic of the pair. MacFarlane

responded, “You’ve thought more about that than I have.”

The Ant Story

Scott Grimes aka Lt. Gordon Malloy told a story about the time when 40-50 ants crawled into Peter Macon’s prosthetic face during a nap, which resulted in a chorus of disgusted groans from the audience. “It was 5 or 6,” Macon corrected, who plays Lt. Cmdr. Bortus on the show. “…and if I rip this [makeup] off I’m ripping my skin off with it, so I had to beat myself in the face to kill the ants.”

Ed and Kelly’s relationship

The season finale ended with a harsh but necessary breakup for the couple. When asked about the future of the relationship, MacFarlane responded, “Watch. You gotta watch. I’m not gonna tell you,” to boos from the audience.

Sealing the Deal

A fan asked MacFarlane how he was able to bring the show to fruition. MacFarlane said, “I tend to do things that I want to watch and space sci-fi has been kind of neglected for a long time. Everything was serialized and everything was really dark, and I missed the optimistic, hopeful sci-fi that is not necessarily a cautionary tale…it just went from there.”

A Light in the Room

“On behalf of the Catholic church, I’m pissed.” A fan opened his question with this joke about the season finale, resulting in a lot of laughs. He then asked the cast to speak on their power to shape culture. Johnson revealed that as a Christian she’s been judged by her peers for appearing on the show. “What you want to do is present the issues and be generous and loving about them to allow people to make their own decisions…If you’re not a part of being the light in the room, you’re just allowing anything to be talked about. My thing is to always be a light in the room.” On playing Claire, Johnson says, “I find it extraordinary. Seth and the rest of the writers have allowed me to be three-dimensional, and not this one dimension that we get stuck on. I get to do everything, and my God I am so excited because if you don’t see me on television it’s going to be somebody else so I’ll be missing my calling which is sinful anyway.” Do you see why she’s my favorite?

Peter Macon wore a KISS mask for at least a few months

Peter Macon revealed that after the made-for-TV Kiss movie came out in the 1970s, he wanted to be Gene Simmons for Halloween and also all the time. He wore the KISS mask 24/7, including one particular June day on the City Bus with his mom. “I feel for her now being a parent,” Macon says. “I needed to wear that mask. A little black kid in Chicago wearing a KISS mask…I imagine myself as a little kid watching [The Orville] like I watched Battlestar Galactica, and being a part of something that can go into someone’s young consciousness, I see that kid walking around in a KISS mask in June…I wasn’t told that I can’t wear the mask at all. It helped blossom my consciousness and I hope that with this kind of work I can do the same thing for some little kid.”

The Hardest Script for Seth MacFarlane to Write

“Nothing that I’ve found. I’ve been in comedy for years and I’ve never had an easier, smoother time writing than on this show. I was probably in the wrong business.” We can leave it at that.

Season 2 Spoilers?

MacFarlane reveals that there is an episode in season 2 that doesn’t have a sci-fi plot. “It’s all character pieces and that to me is the essence of what a good sci-fi show should be able to do. The character should be so strong that if you want to do a story that is pure drama or pure comedy you should be able to do that.”

What’s the deal with Kermit the Frog?

Viewers of the show know that MacFarlane’s character Capt. Ed Mercer has a Kermit doll on his desk that he idolizes. When asked if his obsession “extends to all muppets,” MacFarlane said, “I love The Muppets. The Great Muppet Caper is one of the best musicals ever made. I’m a big Henson fan. I was always astonished by what he pulled off. Kermit is basically a sock puppet with eyes. There’s so much personality in him and I feel that he never got his due as an actor. There’s so much soul in that character.” I adore Jim Henson praise as -fun fact- he graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park, not far from my hometown. Naturally, the panel ended with MacFarlane’s Kermit impersonation.

I had the pleasure to cover the legendary icon Nichelle Nichols celebrating her 85th birthday with family, friends and fans!

Ms. Nichols normally celebrates with friends and families but this year gave 35 lucky fans the opportunity to attend this special milestone birthday.

The celebration kicked off with a red carpet where I was able to ask Ms. Nichols a few questions. The festivities included Carmen Carter and Robert Davi serenading Ms. Nichols in the private dining area at La Piazza (The Grove LA), a special video and everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday’ with a toast of champagne and Sprinkles cupcakes.

It was a delightful evening to see the woman who’s inspirational portrayal of Uhura on Star Trek was an inspiration for children and adults across the world. It was a role she considered not accepting until Martin Luther King reached out to ask her to reconsiders her decision. The non-stereotypical role as an officer exploring space would be the first one for

black women on television that wasn’t a wife, domestic or secretary. Her role blazed a path to the stars for future NASA Astronaut Mae Carol Jemison and so many others to go into STEM. In real life Ms. Nichols began volunteering with NASA and other charitable missions as well as continued acting and appearing at conventions across the world.

Star Trek: Discovery Cast

Star Trek: Discovery Cast

Star Trek: Discovery Cast

Over 50 years ago, the world was first introduced to what would quickly become a cultural phenomenon. Star Trek was a television series that inspired developments in science and technology, broke social barriers, and transported viewers around the globe to new adventures and uncharted frontiers. This fall, Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, while learning that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. Join cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp and James Frain, alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Heather KadinAaron Harberts and Akiva Goldsman for a conversation and introduction to Discovery.

The panel will be moderated by series guest star Rainn Wilson, who is set to play Harry Mudd, the charismatic conman and intergalactic criminal first introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series.

Thursday, July 20 to Sunday, July 23

Fans can get free “intergalactic” rides throughout the Gaslamp District in pedicabs inspired by the design of the U.S.S. Discovery’s captain’s chair. The pedicabs will feature the series’ chair’s distinctive stitched black seats as well as video monitors built into its arm rests which, in this case, will screen trailers for the highly anticipated new show. As an added touch, each vehicle will display an illuminated U.S.S. Discovery delta shield on the back.

Friday, July 21 & Saturday, July 22

Fans can take part in the #TrekDiscovery Challenge when they encounter an array of authentically costumed Trek ambassadors, representing crews from five of the Star Trektelevision series (The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyagerand Enterprise). Fans who post photos of themselves with each of the five series’ crews – and also in the Discovery captain’s chair at the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery – and who tag all six photos with the #TrekDiscovery challenge hashtag on Twitter or Instagram, will be eligible to win a Roku streaming stick and a subscription to CBS All Access. Prizes will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Fans can find clues regarding the location of the #TrekDiscovery crews by following @StarTrek on Twitter and Instagram.

This Blerd is so excited that we have a premier date and details on how to watch the Star Trek Series. I love Star Trek and watched the original series faithfully as a child. I grew up with the prime directive so am #TeamStarTrek

I’m hoping that I will be able to interview the cast at the upcoming SDCC (pray for me my geeklings!) but no matter what I will be subscribing to CBS Access this fall to binge on the first series led by a woman of color! I’m tuning in for Sonequa Martin and Michelle Yeoh since i’m all for WOCGP (Women of Color Girl Power) but can’t resist Doug Jones (not that I can recognize him .. guffaw).

The new series is paying homage to the original Gene Roddenberry prime directive but is pushing the envelope with some drama amongst the Star Fleet staff. Not that I can blame them being on a ship with the same people has to have some drama! You know people are dating, breaking up, gossiping and just not liking all of their co-workers! it’s human and non human nature! I’m hoping that someone will be a little TOO ambitious and cause some trouble between our captain and her #2!

If you are in the USA CBS is giving a taste with the first episode being broadcast on CBS but after that you have to pay a fee to watch it on CBS All Access. This doesn’t bother me since I have streaming cable and don’t usually have access to CBS anyway. I like a few shows on CBS but not enough to subscribe (still miss Brain Dead such a fun show but not a good match for CBS audience). Hopefully this will not be the only series worthy to watch exclusively on the platform and that they will have a good companion series to keep fans tuning in.

See below for how to see the series and leave a comment on if you plan to subscribe to CBS Access to watch Star Trek: Discovery.

Live Long and Prosper

“UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!” is the sci-fi parody adventure movie starring 40 former Star Trek actors premiering on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek!

I think this might be a Guinness World Record with this many former cast member of the beloved series in one movie!

“As an Independent Film Company, we at Archangel Films have worked tremendously hard on this film, and that work has been a gift. Working with the talented cast of 40 ‘Trek‘ stars as well as two ‘Trek” — The Original Series iconic musical talents was an amazing experience,” said Angelique Fawcette.  “I hope that fans, who are used to seeing these actors in more dramatic roles, will have some fun and laughs watching the exploits of a Puppet hero and dozens of their favorite stars in our slapstick parody adventure,” she added.

I’m hoping to cover the premier with over 25 stars and guest stars from all FIVE Star Trek series at the upcoming screening in Hollywood this Wednesday at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres. It’s a family affair with Steven L. & Angelique Fawcettee being writing, directing and producing under Archangel Films.

The parody is in the spirit of Airplane! and Mars Attacks but with a ‘red shirt’ Star Trek sensibility. The Chiodo Brothers created the star Kirk Stillwood (puppet) voiced by Kevin Carlson. Geral Fried composed the score of the film and it’s full circle since he worked on the original series.

“We wanted to create a unique and original film that sci-fi fans can watch again and again, celebrating their love for this iconic TV show. It is a Sci-Fi Parody Adventure, which uses none of ‘Star Trek’s’ intellectual property, with a cast of over forty former stars of the shows in a zany parody, along the lines of ‘Airplane!’ and ‘Mars Attacks!’,” said Steven L. Fawcette. “I hope the five exclamation points in the title “Unbelievable!!!!!” convey the film’s comedic sensibilities,” he added.

“Unbelievable!!!!!” is a Sci-Fi Parody Adventure. The movie follows the crazy exploits of four astronauts (one is an animatronic marionette which resembles the character “Captain Kirk” from the 1960s TV show “Star Trek”) who travel to the Moon on a rescue mission to determine the fate of two NASA comrades who have not been heard from in several days. The individuals they find at the Lunar Base are not whom they appear to be and, through acts of trickery and deception, nearly succeed in killing our heroes. The four return to find that everyone on the planet has been transformed into a variant life-form. Aliens from Mars have conquered Earth and now seek to destroy the last remnants of humanity. The astronauts fight back and soon discover how to rid themselves of the alien threat.

‘Unbelievable!!!!!” stars 40 actors who starred or guest-starred on one of the five “Star Trek” TV series, including Chase Masterson, Garrett Wang, Tim Russ, Nichelle Nichols, Robert Picardo, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, Nana Visitor, Walter Koenig, Linda Park, Connor Trinneer, Manu Intiraymi, Dina Meyer, Olivia d’Abo, Julie Warner, Armin Shimerman, Jeffrey Combs, John Billingsley, Dominic Keating, Max Grodenchik, Casey Biggs, Brenda Bakke, Patti Yasutake, McKenzie Westmore, Anthony Montgomery, Vaughn Armstrong, Gary Graham, Steve Rankin, Michael Dante, Jack Donner, Michael Forest, Sean Kenney, Gary Lockwood, BarBara Luna, Beverly Washburn, Celeste Yarnall, Bobby Clark, Jasmine Anthony, Crystal Allen, Menina Fortunato, along with Gilbert Gottfried and Michael Madsen, and introducing Katarina Van Derham, Producer/Actress Angelique Fawcette, and Singer/Songwriter Emily L. Stanton.

Space … the final frontier” opened up to television viewers on September 8, 1966 with the NBC-TV premiere of “Star Trek.” Creator Gene Roddenberry had envisioned the sci-fi series as the interstellar answer to the popular Western “Wagon Train” but couldn’t have possibly imagined how long the “five-year mission” of the U.S.S. Enterprise would last – cancelled after three seasons (and an unprecedented fan letter campaign to keep it on the air), the program spawned animated and live action TV spinoffs and an ongoing series of big screen adventures.

In 1979, Robert Wise’s STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE kicked off a mania for TV-to-movie adaptations that has thrived ever since and spawned multiple sequels. To celebrate a half-century of “Star Trek,” we present the new documentary on star Leonard NimoyFOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK, and five of the first features following Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov across the galaxy. These films embody the ideals of sci-fi’s first franchise that have endured for 50 years; may they continue to live long and prosper for many more.
