Foodies unite for the COCHON555 return to Los Angeles on March 11th at the Viceroy Santa Monica. The Culinary conception has Five Chefs, Five Pigs, Five Winemakers, Five Somms, Five Barkeeps … all for ONE charity – Piggy Bank!

“The tour is about uplifting small, family farmers through epic culinary moments,” said founder Brady Lowe. “We create and restore connections between the farmer and chef who want to raise, source and serve food raised with purpose and passion. Together, through eating, we become stewards of the good food movement, motivate change and influence our food system from pasture to plate.”

Cochon555 is back on the road and it’s heading to the Viceroy Santa Monica that will be hosting this culinary delight on Sunday, March 11, 2018 with over a hundred prominent chefs, farmers, sommeliers, distillers, brewers and barkeeps celebrating heritage breed pork and local family farming. It’s whole pig cookery with no waste and chefs using their ability to transform dishes that will have you saying ‘souie’ in a bite size taste. Every chef has a 200 pound pig to make a dish to impress the judges and guests at the event and the winner will compete for the regional grand prize to be crowned the ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ of Pork and four day wine & gastronomy in Rioja, Spain. All of the winners will meet at the National Cochon where the best ‘Three Bites’ will compete ‘head to tail’ to be crowned King or Queen for 2018!

Tickets for general admission start at $130; VIP tickets (early admission + exclusive access to cocktail competition and allocated wines and spirits) are $200.

Cochon555 will debut a new experience called Trompo “Hora de Familia” in celebration of its first Global Cochon555 event in Mexico City later this year. Guests wanting a sweet bite will enjoy the Pop-Up Pie Shop presented by Mike’s Pies and Swine and Sweets, an innovative spin on dessert spotlighting notable pastry chefs working with Perfect Puree of Napa Valley.

IMG_0156I was excited to attend the 2015 Cochon555 and was fascinated by the chef’s creative uses of the entire heritage pig. The weekend had three back-to-back events with Chef Walter Manzke of Republique being crowned the ‘Prince of Porc’. He won the title preparing a whole pig menu featuring the ‘Large Black’ raised by Cook Pigs Ranch.  Chef Walter went on to compete for the national title in Denver, CO.

Cochon555 uses heritage breeds and last years’ winner used the ‘Large Black’ a Chinese breed brought to England, known for its taste, pasture foraging skills and overall hardiness. The micro-marbling, short muscle fibers and excellent bellies produce exceptional bacon and moist meat with old world flavor providing Chef Walter ideal meat for his winning menu of five uniquely created delicious bites. Walter’s winning dishes included Pork Belly with Black River Caviar, Jambon-Beurre, Pork Ceviche and Arroz Caldo, a Filipino Rice Porridge. Along with two exclusive dinners hosted by 2014 King of Porc Ray Garcia, Cochon555’s stop in Los Angeles raised awareness for heritage breed pigs raised by family farms. The Los Angeles flavor-studded weekend supports a great cause by starting with two unique dinners bringing together five guest chefs, world-renowned winemakers and beverage experts to create a multi-course, interactive dining experience to benefit Piggy Bank. Los Angeles Times: The TasteYum yum are you counting down the days for the 2015 The Taste at Paramount Studios? It’s the fun foodie event for people who want to foods from all over SoCal in one place. I find one of the best things about attending this food festival at Paramount Studio over Labor Day weekend is that it gives you an opportunity to try not only restaurants but also bakeries, desert shops and ICE CREAM! Hey it’s summer in LA so you know it’s HOT! I’ve had the opportunity to chat with some of the chefs at my favorite restaurants and ask how not only how they started to cook but get some cooking advice. Of course I can’t forget to say that I get to try delicious food! It’s a win win for everyone but especially your tummy! Check out my video from the 2014 The Taste at Paramount Studios! I discovered yummy buns with delightful flavors from green tea to macha that were Philippine recipes from their grandma! (you can order them online), saw an old foodie friend B Sweet Dessert Bar (dessert truck and store) with new bread pudding flavors (favorite is still Red Velvet! YUMMY) and Crème Caramel LA (it was the first time I ever tried Crème Caramel and I fell in LOVE). This year they’ve changed the schedule with a brunch & BBQ on Sunday (you can NEVER go wrong with grilling!) am hoping to try some new coffee and ideas for brunch items!

As a foodie I must admit I look towards LA as the foodie nirvana that titillates my taste buds with cuisines from all over the world as well as modern homestyle (I never say no the mac & cheese) so imagine my surprise when I learned of the Golden Foodies award that recognizes great food in the OC! When I think of the OC it’s not for great food .. not bad food but nothing I’d drive out of town but last year at the Taste of LA they had a couple of restaurants from the OC that got me curious. The food was REALLY good but I just haven’t had time to research a good place to try. BUT I love to vote and give my opinion on food so am thinking I might have to check out the winners! Anyone in the OC planning on rating a hometown favorite or try a new place? Leave a suggestion of a restaurant or bar I should try when I head to the OC this fall!

What are the Golden Foodies?

I had a staycation on Friday with The Taste of Mexico in DTLA with great food from SoCal area restaurants. The four flagship restaurants FRIDA Mexican Cuisine, La Casita Mexicana, Guelaguetza Restaurant and La Monarca Bakery offered interpretations of regional tastes that exposed us to the wide selection of Mexican food that some of us haven’t tasted. With tables dedicated to seasonings to regional agave drinks it was a night to expand what you think Mexican food tastes like! I couldn’t resist the sweet tables and who can enjoy cake without coffee? So thanks to Nescafé for a cup of Joe on a chilly LA winter night. My favorite taco was at the Frida table (beef) and well I can’t choose between my tres leche so I choose all of them!
