Zach Galligan, who played Billy in 1984’s Gremlins and its’ 1990 sequel Gremlins 2:The New Batch, recently spoke with Cherry the Geek TV about his return (this time as a henchman) in Max‘s animated prequel series Gremlins:Secrets of the Mogwai.
“I think they (the producers) wanted some sort of continuity and since (Secrets of the Mogwai) is a prequel there is no way to put in Billy since he is at least fifty years away from being born,” said Galligan at the 51st Annual Saturn Awards where Gremlins:Secrets of the Mogwai was nominated for Best Animated Series. “They asked if I wanted to play another character. I said yes provided that it was not my actual voice. I wanted to show that I could do voices other than just Billy. So they offered me the role of a henchman where I got to change my voice which was fun because it’s animated and it should be a good time and make you smile.”
Galligan says while the show is aimed at kids it works on two levels. “It’s like a Bugs Bunny cartoon. It has sophisticated jokes for adults and it has silly jokes for kids.”
