Earlier this month, The Paley Center for Media announced their lineup for this year’s PaleyFestLA, a showcase of critically acclaimed television shows. This year includes RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Walking Dead, Pose and an already sold out Parks and Recreation reunion.

The cast and creators of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie are confirmed, most likely discussing the fifth season which aired on Jan. 18th, with the sixth season confirmed two days before. In celebration, I will tell you why Grace and Frankie is a truly underrated Netflix original.

  1. The concept. How long has it been since a dramedy centered on older people and their adult children was popular? The premise is so unique. It feels fresh and fun, and the execution is amazing.
  2. The characters. Each character is well written, unique, and relatable. Not many shows can say that. Their relationships are endearing and genuine. A favorite dynamic of mine is Sol and Robert’s, who never fail to be an endearing couple.
  3. The cast. Every actor gives an amazing performance. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are incredible playing what I assume are exaggerations of their own personalities. Sam Waterson and Martin Sheen are charming and lovable, a hard task for characters who spent 20 years cheating on their wives. June Diane Raphael and Brooklyn Decker are convincing and hilarious as the daughters of Jane Fonda’s perfectionist and Martin Sheen’s unavailability. Last but not least, Ethan Embry and Baron Vaughn are brilliant as the two adopted sons of hippie parents.
  4. The writing. This show makes me laugh out loud, a herculean task. Character development and story arcs never feel rushed or unauthentic.

My favorite part of the series is how real it all feels. Rarely do interactions feel forced or unnatural. It’s uncommon that I feel connected to characters the way I care about the ensemble on this show.

Don’t miss the fifth season on Netflix and be sure to grab your tickets for Paleyfest!
