The Dexter Universe is getting bigger. Dexter Morgan, the highly intelligent forensic blood splatter analyst/serial killer made a return to television in 2021 with Dexter: New Blood, a 10-episode limited series on Showtime. (the original Dexter series ran eight seasons on Showtime from 2006-2013). Spoiler alert: That series ended with Dexter dying. Or did it? In 2024, Dexter returned in a brand new series titled Dexter:Original Sin which begins with Dexter being rushed in an ambulance to the hospital. As he is being transported, he flashes back to when he first started working in the Miami-Metro Police Department. The Dexter:Original Sin series is basically a prequel series where we meet younger versions of all of our favorite characters with a serialized storyline telling how Dexter started killing “bad people” in order to control the urges of his “dark passenger.” Original Dexter star Michael C. Hall narrates the story.
Dexter: Original Sin-The Complete First Season is now available on Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment, and they sent Cherry the Geek TV a copy for review.
It’s better than it should be. The style and tone of the original series is there but the thing that really makes the show work is the spot-on casting of the younger versions of the characters. Patrick Gibson is PERFECT as young Dexter Morgan. He has the mannerisms and vocal inflections of Michael C Hall. Molly Brown is also very well cast as Dexter’s foul-mouthed sister Debra. James Martinez, Christina Millian, and Alex Shimizu are all believable as younger versions of Angel Batista, Maria LaGuerta, and Vince Masuka. Christian Slater plays a younger version of Dexter’s father Harry Morgan. While he doesn’t really channel James Remar, who played Harry in the original series, he is quite good. New characters include Aaron Spencer played by Patrick Dempsey, and Tanya Martin played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.
The Blu-ray release of Dexter: Original Sin features a full 1080p High Definition presentation with a 2.00:1 aspect ratio on every episode of the debut season. The video presentations look fantastic as a whole and provide clean presentations on every episode of the first season without any noticeable faults. The detail is sharp, while coloring is vibrant and stellar and black levels are rich, deep and absent of any troubles.
The Blu-ray release features a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack on all 10 episodes. These multichannel soundtracks are very nice in and they offer crisp, clean and immersive audio presentations.
The only bonus feature is a 9-minute behind the scenes featurette called “Dissecting Dexter:Original Sin” which includes interviews/comments with the cast and crew, plus behind the scenes footage and more. I wish it were a little bit longer and more extensive, but it’s good for what it is.
The series has already been renewed for a season two AND there will be a brand new Dexter series this summer titled Dexter:Resurrection. It’s a good time to be a Dexter fan.
