Hannibal Lecter is sunk so deep in our collective psyche it’s easy to forget there was ever a world without him. Easy, likewise, to think of Red Dragon as just Lecter’s introduction to the world and little more than a clever thriller. Yet this is far far greater than its subject matter and by rights should be read as a piece of classic literature. By all means enjoy the chills, thrills and twists if you’re a dedicated thriller fan, but if you’re a highbrow lit fan don’t be put off by its reputation. Try it. Look past the subject matter and revel in Harris’ style which is top notch.
