5K Walk / Run for Epilepsy Awareness Month

Sunday, November 6, 2016 from 8am-12pm 

The Lakers Girls, LA Clippers Spirit Team & Baily, Mascot for the Los Angeles Kings, will be on hand to cheer on participants for the Walk To End Epilepsy on Sunday, November 6.   Celebrity trainer Wesley Okerson, from NBC’s Strong and holistic nutritionist  & author Kelly LeVeque (Be Well by Kelly) will also be on hand with tips and tricks to improve your health and stamina.

With more than 4,000 participants at the 2015 edition, the upcoming Walk is the largest event in the nation to raise awareness and support for Epilepsy, a spectrum disorder that affects 1 in 26 people.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month.  Approximately 5.1 Million people in the United States have had a diagnosis of Epilepsy or a seizure disorder.  With 150,000 new cases of Epilepsy each year in the United States, 1 in 26 people will develop Epilepsy in their lifetime.  More people die of Epilepsy than Breast Cancer.  1 in 10 people will have a seizure in their lifetime.   It’s twice as common as Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy, and Multiple Sclerosis combined.

All proceeds support programs including:  the Epilepsy Helpline, Teen/Family Camps, the Big Brain Exhibit, Therapy Groups, Statewide Advocacy, Seizure First Aid and Seizure Recognition training for school/workplace/first responders, Research and Care+Cure initiatives to speed referral to epilepsy specialists.

 

The Walk to End Epilepsy will feature a Pop-up Village for children, epilepsy information booths, arts/crafts booths; a photo booth; Wishing Wall interactive art piece; The Wellness Institute’s booth featuring The Charlie Foundation for Ketogenic Diets and special guest celebrity nutritionist Kelly LeVeque of Be Well by Kelly; stage performances and an awards presentation.  The Walk to End Epilepsy will also feature community booths, a marketplace, food trucks and musical performances by DJ Hapa. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet the epilepsy specialists and learn more about the epilepsy spectrum, diagnosis and treatment.
