IZombie Season 3 Recap – Heaven Just Got a Little Bit Smoother

Warning spoilers for Tuesday’s iZombie

I was on pins and needles at the end of Season 2 trying to figure out what did everything mean! Well the season premier ‘Heaven Just Got a Little Bit Smoother’ answered a lot of questions and set up the overall moral quandary not only for Liv (Team Human or Team Zombie) and how her friends (human and zombie) will navigate the reality of what would happen if people learned that we have zombies among us.

On the S3 premier Tuesday Liv and Clive headed to Fillmore Graves HQ. It was the moment when it hit both of them that they were dealing with some major badasses with superhuman powers and the money to make life a lot simpler for assimilation. One of the more touching moments of this episode that will be a more emotional core for Clive is when he sees a cute little boy, Wally that used to live in his apt building. Neither of them had thought about zombie kids and what that would entail (education, living life and eating brains). I think as the season progresses the murder of Wally and his mother Anna will propel Clive to find who killed them and make zombies seem more like individuals. I suspect it might be a conspiracy nut who called into the radio station saying that he had ‘zombie’ neighbors after Liv & Clive weren’t able to stop the security guard from spilling the beans.

Liv and Clive driving to the radio station

I thought it was quite cleaver to take care of the investigation by blowing up the space so that it will burn up most of the bodies and forensic evidence. As well as getting to all of the survivors of the Chaos Killer to have a good cover story absolving Major. Sadly a few witnesses will not stop people from still thinking that Major is guilty and he WAS guilty so …. As Major tries to get back to normal he was reminded that it’s hard to find a job when people think your a serial killer! Luckily he’s a man with a special skill set so he signs on with Fillmore Graves. Hopefully Vivian never learns that HE killed her husband cause she doesn’t seem like a forgiving type of woman! But Major is basically a decent guy which is why he didn’t kill anyone but he still kidnapped people and left the entire city terrorized. His new life is going to have him evaluate what he wants to do next from taking the cure to finding the hooker with a heart of gold or embracing the life of a mercenary and how those decisions will affect his friendships. It wasn’t the life he planned as a teacher!

It’s always good to be rich and as Vivian Still, CEO of Fillmore Graves begins to use her position to set up a Zombie Homeland off Seattle. As they prepare for ‘Discovery Day’, when humans learn about their brain-eating living dead neighbors the plan is to have a self sustaining place for them to live with schools, homes and of course her mercenary business! I can imagine a LOT of people wanting to hire some undead mercenaries <guffaw>. I mean they are mercenaries so how moral can the business or leadership truly be??

Liv is coming off the mercenary brain and is having some major emotional fallout after she had to

Girl you need some bronzer and hair dye!

shoot her zombie boyfriend when he was brain crazy and going to kill Clive (BFF). I think this season is going to be a major upheaval for the entire gang from Peyton, Ravi and Blaine love triangle as she’s torn between a sexy good doctor or a sexy drug dealing kingpin … such a hard choice! Not that Ravi doesn’t have a LOT on his plate with only 19 cures and no way to make more and working on offsetting the memory loss he’s going to be one busy doctor. I’m also thinking his arch-nemesis who fired him might come back to the lab as she tries to figure out WHY the body was in such a advanced state of decay and had brain in the stomach! I’m not sure how Liv & Ravi will explain that but am sure it will be a doozy of jumping through hoops.

Colony recap Season 1 & 2

I had the pleasure to hear about Colony at the 2015 SDCC where I interviewed some of the cast and executive producers of the series. It was a huge mystery since nobody hadseen much of the show (under tight wrap) but I do love a man in uniform with a jaunty red beret.

From the first episode of the show we were trapped behind a wall with an occupation military force that ruled with an iron fist. We had no idea how they had taken over or if we had any kind of government outside of the Los Angeles. We did know that people were resisting (hello Geronomo) but it felt like we were outgunned AND out-teched. I had no idea who was on what side or why. But the pace of the first season had me watching and of course thinking what would I do in that situation (be a mouse hiding in the shadow or a brave lion willing to fight). Really the only think I knew after looking at the occupation tech (those DRONES) was that we hadn’t been invaded by China or Russia and that some Americans were willing to sell out the country for power and money (remind you of anyone you know or may have voted for??).

My theory was finally confirmed with the season finale when we finally saw who was really in charge and where desedents were sent (NOT Kansas). But season 2 took us back to the days before life ended as we know it and I have to say I am incredibly impressed by premier. The pace was fast, we got to know the characters a lot better and also SEE what the heck happened. Even better I got to watch the premier with the cast and two executive producers (one of whom gave me a major clue about the upcoming season) as they and other fans reacted to the big reveals.
Will (Josh Holloway) is a pragmatist who’s FBI partner Devon (Carolyn Michelle Smith) might be dirty with kickbacks from Armenian criminals (the mob). Will is loyal so instead of reporting her he plans to ask for a transfer. Katie (Sarah Wayne Callis) is working at the Yonk and meets Broussard (Tory Kittles) for the first time after he returns to LA to care for his sick mother (well to say goodbye really). Well it turns out Alan Snyder (Peter Jacobson) is a low level manager with MAJOR sticky fingers trying to support two households (being divorced in LA is damned expensive) and a daughter that is ‘team Mom’ and is recruited to be in charge of LA.

Mix all of this into an hour and we have some major trouble brewing for S2 of Colony. We finally get to see the cast living normal LA lives in a sprawling city that has strangers that will eventually meet as friend and foe. It was a regular day with the kids in school and the youngest son on a field trip to Santa Monica. The first inkling something is wrong when the FBI office gets reports of people kidnapped/missing. Will and Devon go to investigate and realize that it wasn’t random. They both have the inkling it’s some sort of attack. Now I can’t blame Devon I’d want to get the heck out of dodge too when all the people who are on a secret list to be the first defense to get the country running all come up missing. While Will is concerned with his family and getting everyone in one central location that has food, water and security so he tells everyone to get to the Yonk. While Alan has a meeting with some ‘friendly’ people who like his style of graft and think that he’d be a great addition to the ‘new order’. Watching him meet the alien for the first time was mindblowing since it means this was a long term plan and that they had access to ALL of our databases .. hmm. I love how Alan was told he can
save his family and he grabs his daughter and leaves the ex like dirty dishwater (I don’t think the divorce was amicable!). Now that Will is searching for Charlie how will they get Bram (Alex Neustaedter) out of jail, keep the nutty babysitter from the kids and well stay alive???

I think what makes this S2 premier so effective is that it sets everything up for the season. We find out how the wall went up, that Alan really wasn’t that bad, Will is in Santa Monica looking for his wildling and gets to see his old partner Devon (is she still a friend???). As well as who will be in charge and how everything is going to shake out. I know that Madeline (Amanda Righetti)
hitched her wagon to a new star Burgess (Adrian Pasdar) to keep the insulin flowing to her child while still mourning the loss of her husband. That the rebellin has some hard information and scientists/tech that might finally be able to strike back (Geronimo is NOT dead) of course so will the aliens so might not end that well for Los Angeles. While Will is in Santa Monica how will Beau (Carl Weathers) and the other cops deal with squashing trouble from those pesky humans. I can’t wait to spend my Thursday (dateless) nights with my Colony and see what will happen next.

Leave a comment below what you think will happen this season on Colony?

My first Walking Dead Press Room at SDCC

I will not lie I kind of fangirled at the AMC Walking Dead Press Conference during SDCC 2016 and all I can say is ‘I’m just happy to be here’. The press conference had the Production Team: Scott Gimple, Exec Producer/Showrunner, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert – Executive Producers and Greg Nicotero, Director/Special Effects Make-up Supervisor. Cast members: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, Michael Cudlitz, Sonequa Martin-Green, Christian Serratos, Ross Marquand, Josh McDermitt and Jeffrey Dean Morgan who answered questions about the upcoming and past seasons, new characters and the comic book series.

Official The Walking Dead Season 7 Comic-Con Trailer

The cast of the series is so big they split it into two parts <yoinks> and I got to ask one question <hurrah> but didn’t record it <bah> since we were told NO recordings but afterwards realized nobody else followed the rules but me <wah>.

This upcoming season of The Walking Dead (7th) will have a few new characters from the comic book series but they are a few years behind. Especially since they read the series and ‘know’ what’s coming around the bend for instant the dumpster episode was tough. They do read the tweets/blogs/fandom but don’t allow it to affect series decisions but they do respect fandom reaction. Of course a comic book pacing is different than a television series but fans of each and/or both are completely invested so the team wants to respect them and know that it’s a lifetime commitment with no real end in sight.

As a TV series fan I do know about the comic book series and have seen a few episodes. But since I’m only TV every season is a huge surprise with the who, what and why. My friends that read the comic book have to be warned for <no spoilers> but the producers did drop a few hints during the press conference that TWD world is expanding and that we’ll meet new groups of survivors. Which should add a lot of drama AND a tiger .. a CG Tiger <guffaw> that we saw in the trailer. I’ve heard about Shiva but wasn’t sure what/who and how that would affect the series but the trailer makes those new survivors totally bad ass but am not sure if they are what I’d call ‘good’ but of course the ‘nice’ wouldn’t survive a zombie apocalypse! The series is currently in VA but they said that we might get to see another region of the world with a new kind of weather. I’m hoping winter since I’d assume freezing cold would slow down zombies … I’m no scientist but zombies can freeze right??

As much as I’m team Rick and the rest of my survivor crew they were just too much of a bull in a china shop who always seemed to win and eventually (in real life). Even the biggest bully will meet an even BIGGER bully to knock them down and that’s happened with the introduction of Negan. We’ve gotten clues that someone was in charge with an even bigger more vicious group but I had no idea just how bad this other group will turn out to be in the upcoming season. I mean this past summer having to wait till October to find out who he plans to beat to death has had me on pins and needles! Sorry to say if we have to say goodbye to someone I’m fine with Maggie. How can you have a baby with zombies running around loose???

As I mentioned before I got to ask ONE question about Rick ending up with Michonne. The producers said that (paraphrase): It’s an amazing group of people and be embraced (that they embraced Michonne aka Danai Gurira) new cast members. The character Andrea in the comic book ended up with Rick but we decided to do something difference. I was in charge of the show. When he pitched it I was happy to have it happen. Sometimes in TV shows when you feel the chemistry between cast members in the moment you have to allow the characters to evolve and make room for development.

IMG_9731When the press conference concluded some of the cast members stayed behind to talk with press members. I made a beeline for Rick  Grimes aka Andrew Lincoln and asked well more stated that the scene when he and Michonne were in bed … well I just giggled than said always thought that he needed to be with a strong woman. Andrew laughed and said (paraphrase). ‘Me too I’ve been waiting for that for a long time’. <scream> so wish I’d recorded it but didn’t realize he’d answer my question!
