Unexpected fever dream with the monster under the bed

Dust Bunny directed and written by Bryan Fuller, was a delightfully unexpected fever dream starring Mads Mikkelsen (The Neighbor), Sofia Sloan (Aurora), and Sigourney Weaver (Laverne). This is his first feature film, but he has worked as a writer-producer for television on ‘Pushing Daisies’, ‘Hannibal’, and the showrunner of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ and ‘American Gods’ first seasons. You can see his love of fantastical stories with Dust Bunny, which is a nightmare fairy tale of Aurora, a little girl, and the monster under her bed.

The trailer was an intriguing breadcrumb that made me think it was going to be a colorful action movie about saving a child who used nightmares to understand the disappearance of her parents. As the movie went on, at first I thought it was a dream because of Bryan’s use of color and dream imagery but as it went on I realized the monsters were more than just the killers cleaning up a mess.

This is a action horror that kept revealing new surprises that had me on the edge of my seat hiding my eyes and squeeling in fear. Bryan slowly builds up to the monster with shadow and the viewers own imagination before revealing the F/X monster that was surprisingly scary. The cast works so well together as we get to know what they do in the nightmare fairytale of death. The action really builds up to crescendo once we are in the apt and monsters meet monsters in a death match.

I was delighted to see Aurora finally have someone listen to her and the Neighbor takes on a pseudo parental figure as he tries to understand 10 year old speak. I especially enjoy the Neighbor’s interaction with Laverne as we uncover the flirtatious relationship that she used to assign/order his work assignments.

I strongly recommend Dust Bunny and make sure the lights are off, popcorn bucket close to hand, and get ready to scream and laugh.
