FREE FRIDAYS BOOK

March 21, 2014: Today’s Free Fridays book selection is LONG TIME COMING by bestselling author, playwright, and motivational speaker Vanessa Miller. It’s a novel about faith, love, and redemption.

Deidre Clark-Morris is a faithful Christian who has everything she could dream of — except the children her heart longs for. Kenisha Smalls has lived in poverty all her life. She has three children by three different men and has just been diagnosed with inoperable cancer. While the meeting between these two women appears accidental, it becomes their catalyst of hope. Neither woman expects the blessing that God has in store for her.

FREE FRIDAYS AUTHOR RECOMMENDATION

“I really love Michelle Stimpson’s work,” says Vanessa Miller, the author of our Free Fridays selection, LONG TIME COMING. “My favorite book by her is BOAZ BROWN. She has a down-to-earth way of writing and communicating love to her readers that warms my heart with each book that I read.”

B&N Free Fridays: Love Thy Neighbor by Mark Gilleo and the Bad Girl’s Journal app

I LOVE Free Fridays courtesy of Barnes and Noble!  I don’t always take the free book they offer since some of them don’t look that interesting but this is very appealing to my mystery fan side so what’s to lose??? Nothing it’s free dangit!

Today’s Free Fridays book selection is Love Thy Neighbor by Mark Gilleo – a conspiracy thriller that begs the question, “Do you ever truly know your neighbors?”

Graduate student Clark Hayden spends most of his holidays consoling his mother over the recent loss of his father, and worries about her diminished mental state. Turns out though, his time away from school will be much more eventful than he ever could have anticipated.

Finding himself ensnared within a terrorist organization whose headquarters are stationed across the street from his childhood home, Clark realizes it’s up to him to save his neighborhood – and the world – from the splinter cell’s deadly intentions.

Today’s Free Fridays app selection is The Bad Girl’s Journal by Bad Girl Swirl. This fun, cute journal app is inspired by Cameron Tuttle’s bestselling Bad Girl’s Guides. You can organize your entries by topic, log in your mood for the day, switch journal themes, insert and share photos, and more! And since we know journals can be very private affairs, there’s the option to hide posts or “burn” particularly incendiary entries – just press a button and watch your entry go up in flames!

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Mark recommends:

All Over but the Shoutin’ by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Rick Bragg is one of my favorite books. Rick Bragg’s use of the English language, the rich details of a hard-scrabble life, and the description of real-life characters most people could only dream up, makes this book a must read.  His journey from backwoods Alabama to Harvard will make you both laugh and cry.

Exciting Free Fridays News!

Starting today, every Friday we’ll be highlighting a free NOOK App in addition to each week’s book selection. Read on to discover today’s Free Fridays App pick.

Today’s Free Fridays Book selection is David Rhodes’ triumphant Driftless—a beautifully-evocative novel of American rural life.

Rhodes made a splash on the literary scene in the 1970s, but a tragic motorcycle accident derailed his promising career. Driftless is his first novel in 30 years, and it’s certainly worth the wait. Set in a rural and remote southwestern Wisconsin town, Rhodes’ novel explores the lives of ordinary people who face extraordinary challenges. From an invalid who gambles away her family’s savings, to a widowed pastor who’s falling in love again, the intertwined stories form a portrait of our varied and complex human condition.

Luckily you won’t have to wait another 30 years for David Rhodes’ next novel. Jewelweed is available for pre-order now.

We wanted to make a big splash for our very first Free Fridays App, so we turned to one of our favorite and most useful apps: OfficeSuite Professional 7 – a $14.99 value!

In today’s mobile culture, we’re all used to the convenience of being able to work whenever and wherever we are. With OfficeSuite, you can create, view, edit and print Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and attachments and view PDF files right on your NOOK. So when you’re at lunch and get an urgent email from your boss, just open OfficeSuite to get to work while you’re on-the-go.

Once you’ve used OfficeSuite Professional 7 a few times, you’ll wonder how you survived without it, so make sure you grab this limited-time free offer today!

It’s free nook book Friday Michael Baron Spinning

Well this Friday’s free friday nook book is Michael Baron’s Spinning and NO it’s not about working out.  Instead this looks like a book that speaks to me at this point in my life.  It seems that everyday brings some new unexpected twist that I have to figure out.  Like a lot of people it’s been everything from love (disappointing dates) to career direction (new path through a jungle full of man eating beasts) and just trying to stay on the path of getting fit.  If it’s not one thing its another and the idea of an unexpected child where that would put me over the deep end!  Reading the description got me thinking what would I do if (God forbid some tragedy happened) where I would have the responsibility of a child.  I know that I would try to do the right thing and that mean not living in Los Angeles (the cost of living is crazy expensive) and I’d want to give a child a good life.  What changes would you make to your life?  Would you have to take time to adjust?  Would you drop everything and change your life around the child?  Tough questions that really depend on your child rearing theory.  If you think the child is the center of the universe or  children should be seen not heard .. etc ….

Free Fridays: Spinning

Michael Baron’s The Journey Home was one of our most popular Free Fridays titles yet. So I’m extra excited to announce today’s selection is his equally-impressive novel, Spinning.

Those who enjoyed the complexity and deeply-felt storytelling in The Journey Home will find the same elements in Spinning. This time, Baron introduces Dylan Hunter—a man in the prime of his life who has everything he’s ever wanted. With a successful career, a string of adoring women and a great group of friends, Dylan is living the high life. Thanks to his golden tongue, he’s able to get himself (and his high-paying clients) out of any tight space, with a little ‘spin.’

Then a former girlfriend comes back into his life, with a  3 year-old daughter in-tow. The girl’s not Dylan’s, but he soon finds his priorities realigned when he becomes her sole guardian. Readers will sympathize with Dylan’s desire to hold on to all of the things his old life afforded, but they’ll keep turning the pages to see if he’ll find peace in this new role he never thought he’d be playing.

Once you’ve fallen in love with Baron’s heartfelt storytelling, I’m confident you’ll want to read his newest novel, Leaves, available now for NOOK.

Free Fridays Recommends

Each week, we ask our featured author to recommend a book or author that you may want to check out. Since authors are such passionate readers themselves, we thought you might like to find out what they love to read, too! Here’s what Michael recommends:

My publisher sent me a copy of Twelve Months, by Steven Manchester, and I just found it incredibly moving. It’s a story about a guy who finds out he only has a year to live and decides to make the most of every second. I’ve never been one for “bucket lists,” but this book really made me think about what was important and who mattered to me the most. What a powerful novel!

Free ebook Friday on Barnes & Noble

Did you see this week’s free ebook for the Nook on B&N?  It’s the first book in Marjorie Liu’s paranormal romance series called Tiger Eye.  I love free but am not into these types of books but will download it since it’s probably great for reading on a plane.  You know something light and frothy of course the guy on the cover is smokin hot so that’s nothing to sneeze at!! lol

Today’s Free Fridays selection, Tiger Eye, is the first book in Marjorie M. Liu’s critically-acclaimed Dirk & Steele paranormal romance series.

Wish-granting genies have been part of folklore tradition for centuries, but Liu’s novel offers a sultry twist. When Dela Reese purchases a small box in a Beijing market, little does she know it will change her life forever. When she opens the box, a handsome and powerfully built shape-shifter emerges. Now Dela is the unwitting slave master of this ancient mystical warrior—Devi—but unlike his past masters, she’s willing to help him break the curse that sealed his fate long ago.

As Dela and Hari find themselves in battle with the shape-shifter’s ancient nemesis, their attraction grows until the unlikely pair embark on a passionate and dangerous affair.
